ABOUT CCT

Based in New York City, the Center for Children and Technology (CCT) is one of EDC’s research and development centers. Founded in 1980 at Bank Street School of Education, CCT investigates how technology can enhance equitable access to teaching and learning across a wide range of educational settings. CCT conducts basic, applied, causal, and formative research, working in collaboration with educational, corporate, government, and research institutions, as well as communities. CCT also designs and develops prototype software and instructional resources that support engaged, active learning for underserved communities. CCT offers a dynamic and highly collaborative work environment that seeks to answer challenging practical as well as theoretical questions about teaching and learning, and is centered on teachers, students, families, and communities, and the tools that can help create successful learning environments.

Job Description

The Center for Children and Technology (CCT) is seeking a Part Time, Casual Field Researcher to work on a research project that runs from September 2022 through April 2023. The project evaluates whether digital media can improve middle and high school students’ history skills. The Casual employee will assist with quantitative and qualitative data collection and support the implementation of a pilot research study and subsequent efficacy study. We anticipate that data collection will be remote, but it is possible that some data collection might involve travel to participating schools, both locally and nationally.

EDC Casual employees generally work as needed and are paid an hourly rate (approximately $25-26 per hour).  A casual position receives statutory benefits of Social Security contributions, Medicare contributions, unemployment insurance, worker’s compensation insurance and sick leave. A casual position ends when work is complete.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

The person in this position is expected to communicate clearly and courteously; to develop and maintain positive relationships with clients, consultants, collaborators, co-workers, field sites, research participants, and funders; and to work respectfully with EDC colleagues. The job requires adherence to EDC policies and procedures.

Under management and guidance, the Casual Researcher provides support to the data collection efforts, including:

  • Participates in training related to data collection 
  • Assisting with administrative tasks relevant to the study, including data management efforts
  • Coordinating and communicating with study team leaders to follow established data collection protocols
  • Communicating effectively with teachers participating in the study
  • Assisting with the set-up of technology and equipment in preparation for study activities as needed
  • Conducts classroom observations virtually 
  • Coordinates and communicating with study team leaders to follow established data collection protocols
  • Submitting collected data in a timely fashion and being able to participate in data cleaning process

Approximate workload is 10 to 15 hours per week during the study periods but might be higher or lower depending on the stage of the study.

Qualifications

This position requires demonstrable initiative, creativity, and flexibility; superior organizational skills; the ability to work independently and in groups; and strong interpersonal skills. Specific requirements include:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education & experience
  • 1–2 years related research or education required
  • Experience conducting semi-structured interviews with adults preferred
  • Experience conducting classroom observations preferred
  • Experience with data entry and cleaning in Excel and/or Stata; familiarity with Qualtrics
  • Experience working with students and teachers within a school setting preferred
  • Interest in the roles of technology and media in supporting learning preferred
  • Willingness to travel to data-collection locations, both local and national
