Project Description
The goal of the five-year, USAID-funded Integrated Child and Youth Development (ICYD) Activity is for Ugandan children and youth, especially the most vulnerable, to receive the support and services necessary to lead resilient, healthy, and productive lives. The ICYD Activity is expected to achieve the following:
- Children and youth have improved learning outcomes;
- Children and youth are safe and healthy in their community and learning environments; and
- Youth practice positive behaviors and are able to make informed decisions about their lives and relationships.
Working in partnership with MOES and MGLSD, district and zonal officials, and other Ugandan government and civil society partners, ICYD will comprise a series of activities to: support improved basic education for Ugandan children; address school-related and gender-based violence; facilitate enhanced child protection and support for vulnerable youth; provide support to HIV-affected orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) and their caregivers/families; and support HIV care and treatment outcomes in close collaboration with clinical and community structures.
Job Description
The Digital Materials Specialist will support the Materials Development Manager to work with the Early Grade Reading and SRGBV teams to develop ICT support for teacher training, coaching and supervision (including audio, video, and interactive media resources) and resources for community-based and classroom learning in EGR and prevention of SRGBV.
As a member of the project team the Digital Materials Specialist will:
- Develop ICYD quality standards and field testing protocols for digital materials, in collaboration with EGR and SRGBV staff and home office STTA;
- Support budgeting for the development and production of audio, visual and tactile materials for EGR and SRGBV teacher training, monitoring and support supervision;
- Work with Print Materials Specialist and EGR and SRGBV staff to ensure that digital materials align and coordinate with print-based materials;
- Work with EGR and SRGBV staff and home office STTA to develop audio, visual and tactile materials for supporting classroom and community-based EGR instruction and SRGBV training;
- Lead field testing and quality assurance of audio, visual and tactile materials;
- Work with EGR and SRGBV staff and home office STTA to develop and facilitate user training for effective use and management of audio, visual and tactile materials;
- Work with ICYD procurement team to ensure on-time distribution of audio, visual and tactile materials;
- Work with M&E team to develop tools for monitoring of use and management of digital materials;
- Train staff and partners to monitor use and management of digital materials in classroom and community-based EGR instruction and SRGBV training;
- Work with EGR and SRGBV staff to ensure use of feedback on use and management of digital materials to improve EGR instruction and SRGBV training;
- Support the Materials Development Manager to advocate with MoES and NCDC for provision of age and grade level appropriate digital materials for supporting EGR instruction and SRGBV training;
- Support the Private Sector Engagement team to leverage resources to support provision and expansion of digital materials;
- Document digital materials development, production and distribution processes and the challenges involved, and
- Other tasks as required in support of project goals.
Qualifications
The candidate for the position of Digital Materials Specialist shall have, at a minimum, the following qualifications:
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field; an advanced degree or training in digital resource production is an added advantage.
Skills and Experience:
- Experience producing digital teaching and learning resources, preferably for EGR instruction and/or anti-SRGBV campaigns;
- Experience in audio and video production and knowledge of audio and video production resources and assets in Uganda;
- Graphic design experience (InDesign preferred) and knowledge of market for digital asset production in Uganda;
- Experience in planning and delivering training, preferably for teachers and community groups;
- Experience in monitoring use and management of digital materials;
- Understanding of Uganda’s education context, including the role of the National Curriculum Development Center and MoES in teaching and learning materials development and production;
- Ability to lead multiple small teams simultaneously;
- Ability to write reports;
- At least 6 years of progressively responsible and directly relevant experience;
- Ability to work in a cross-cultural setting, negotiate diplomatically, and function well under pressure.
Language:
Fluency in spoken and written English is a requirement.
Some knowledge of Uganda’s local languages is an added advantage.
