Job Description

United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has selected EDC to implement the USAID Let’s Read Project, a 5-year, $48.9 million project in the five target provinces of Eastern, Muchinga, Southern, Northwestern and Western Zambia that works to improve reading outcomes for approximately 1.4 million children attending pre-primary (kindergarten) through to Grades 3 and provide professional development for teachers to support reading interventions in Zambian public and community schools. EDC is currently hiring for this position for the USAID Let’s Read Project:

The Illustrator/Graphic Designer will be based in Lusaka and will have the ability to create reading materials appropriate for young learners and practicing teachers. S/he should have experience in print media, preferably in an educational publishing setting. In addition, flexibility, adaptability and the ability to learn quickly in a technical and creative environment, while delivering quality work with tight deadlines, are key attributes of this individual. The incumbent will report to the Reading Materials Developer.

Essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

· Conceptualize themes by studying information and materials.

· Illustrates concept by designing rough layout of art and copy regarding arrangement, size, type size and font style, and related aesthetic concepts taking into account MoGE criteria for teaching and learning material development.

· Prepares final layout print-ready files of art.

· Apply design skills -  typography, the handling and manipulation of images, freehand graphics, and basic design elements.

· MoGE/Partner Relations: This person must be willing to work with other non-technical and technical people and appreciate their points of view. Therefore, able to listen and interpret feedback information into clear concepts and design to help EDC meet the needs of its target groups.

· Responsible for meeting expectations and deliverables on time and in high quality.

· Effectively develops in a clean, well structured, easily maintainable format.

· Utilizes storyboarding and graphic pre-designs where appropriate.

· Workload Organization Skills: The job comes with a demanding work load. Therefore, ability to plan, prioritize and execute work in a timely manner will be essential.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirement:

The candidate for the position shall have at a minimum the following qualifications:

· BSc / BA university degree graphic designing.

· Excellent written and oral communication skills.

· Desire and willingness to work in a collaborative, innovative, flexible and team-oriented environment.

Skills and Experience:  

· 3–5 practical experience in development of graphics creation with Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, (Adobe Creative Suite);

· Practical exposure and/or experience in an education publishing environment;

· Ability to operate effectively as a member of the development team as well as an individual for quick turnaround of enhancements and adjustments;

· Demonstrates creative, technical and analytical skills;

· Demonstrates ability to communicate effectively in both technical and business environments.

Language:  

Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of (and proficiency in) Cinyanja, Chitonga, Silozi, Lunda, Luvale, Kikaonde and Icibemba languages highly preferred.
