Job Description

The Center for Children and Technology in EDC’s US Division has an opening for a part-time, temporary Researcher (With Technical Expertise), reporting to the Study Manager, in the New York office.

EDC|CCT is seeking a part time, temporary researcher to support the setup and implementation of technology for a large-scale study. The study’s focus is to learn about participating families use of videos, games, and activities in the home. This study may help us identify new ways to help young children improve their learning. This position is ideal for a person seeking experience using technology systems to support and track multimedia-based learning. The individual selected for this role will gain experience with technology setup and provisioning, technology troubleshooting, and other activities related to the research for this study. This position is based in New York City, but may include local and national travel to study sites.

EDC casual employees generally work as needed. This position will offer an average of 20 hours/week from approximately January 2020 to June 2020 (the actual hours per week will vary depending on phase and needs of the project). A casual position receives statutory benefits of Social Security contributions, Medicare contributions, unemployment insurance, worker’s compensation insurance, and sick leave. A casual position ends when work is complete.                                                                         

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The person in this position is expected to communicate clearly and courteously; to develop and maintain positive relationships with clients, consultants, collaborators, co-workers, field sites, and funders; and to work respectfully with EDC colleagues. The job requires adherence to EDC policies & procedures.

Under management and guidance, the Casual Researcher (with Technical Expertise) provides support to the technology experience efforts, including:

  • Technology provisioning
  • Technology delivery logistics
  • Technology troubleshooting
  • Maintaining records
  • Preparing recommendations

The Casual Researcher (with Technical Expertise):

  • Facilitates project teamwork; engages collaboratively in feedback
  • Assists with specific administrative tasks
  • Assists with quality assurance procedures
  • Communicates effectively  and courteously with families participating in the study
  • Provides logistical support
  • May be expected to travel locally and nationally

The Casual Researcher (with Technical Expertise) will work an average of 20 hours a week for about six months. Flexible scheduling is available, but the hire would have to be available within regular work hours (9am – 6pm), as well as some weekends during data collection periods. It is possible that it will be close to 40 hours some weeks (e.g., Jan – Mar) and then less than 20 hours per week the remaining time.

Qualifications

This position requires precise attention to detail; strong communication and interpersonal skills; demonstrable initiative, creativity, and flexibility; superior organizational skills; the ability to work independently and effectively in groups; and comfort with repetitive tasks. Specific requirements.

  • 1–2 years of related research, education or administrative coordination, requiring experience with computer applications (including databases) and internet research
  • Flexible availability from January 2020 to June 2020
  • Experience and comfort provisioning technology devices, preferably for research studies
  • Experience troubleshooting technology
  • Experience with data entry
  • Experience working with families with young children preferred
  • Interest in research in children’s media
