A preventive health checkup helps in detecting various diseases at an early stage. It is important especially for men and women of the elderly group who have a high risk of developing several diseases. Preventive health checkups help in avoiding or slowing down the disease progression so as to offer you a better life. The preventive check-up (to qualify for the tax deduction) can be for self, spouse, parents and dependent children only. (Note: There is no limit prescribed on the number of children. Also, there is no deduction available on payment for in-laws, siblings and children who are not financially dependent on you).  A medical insurance policy allows you to avail tax deduction under Section 80D of Income Tax Act for any expenses incurred for preventive health check-ups. You can avail Rs. 5,000 for the cost incurred for preventive health check-ups for self, spouse, childrens and  parents.
