Job Description

The Mental Health Specialist I (MHS I) is responsible to work cooperatively with the supervisor, residential program coordinator and other staff in developing, implementing, and evaluating individual care, positive behavioral support needs, and programming. This individual should follow up directly with the supervisor on any program or personnel issues within the home. He or she should follow up with the coordinator or supervisor in areas related to household, medical, or maintenance needs in the home.

The Mental Health Specialist I staff is responsible to provide direct services and supports to each person served according to his/ her needs, including: assisting in maintaining a clean, safe living environment, meal preparation, transportation and supervising, training, and assisting the individuals in every aspect of their lives while promoting a person centered approach.

The Mental Health Specialist I staff is a specific position assigned only to specific locations. The position and its corresponding wage is not transferable when working at other locations. This position is dependent on specialized funding of specific individuals served. If the person served transfers, is discharged or the funding is eliminated, the position and wage will be eliminated from the designated locations.  

Mental Health Specialists I work in our residential settings working with persons served who have behaviors which can be managed with programming. Persons served in these locations may have alone time and can integrate in the community but require additional focus to ensure community integration and safety of persons served.

Qualifications

  • Must have a high school diploma or GED Certificate, basic computer skills, minimum of two years’ experience in the delivery of mental health services. 
  • Two years’ experience in delivery of significant behavioral health services. Must be able to demonstrate de-escalation techniques, conflict resolution, positive support methods, and person-centered approach with person served who may present significant mental health symptoms, physical and verbal aggression, property destruction, chemical dependence, brain injury, and cognitive impairments.
  • Need the ability to understand and implement behavior support plans, treatment plans, functional assessments, individualized support plans, and person-centered plans.
  • Must be physically fit and be able to stand, squat, bend, or walk for long periods of time. Ability to lift 50lbs is necessary.
  • Must have counseling skills. Assess person’s mental health status through interviews and observation. Follow plan of care, de-escalation techniques, positive support role, and crisis intervention techniques.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, including the ability to read, write, and speak English clearly.
  • Ability to assess situations and make sound judgments when given guidance and priorities. Anticipate possible outcomes of actions and react accordingly.
  • Ability to work as a team member to maintain consistency and quality services; ability to exchange support, constructive criticism, and ideas with others. 
  • Ability to effectively work one: one with individuals and within group settings
  • Ability to plan and prioritize work to manage time effectively and accomplish assigned tasks. Ability to self-manage tasks effectively and communicate needs.
  • Ability to maintain a positive professional and therapeutic rapport with individuals who struggle with significant behavioral or mental health concerns.

Additional Information

HOURS WORKED

May be full or part-time; with a mixture of weekday and weekend hours. The specific number and times of scheduled hours should be set upon hiring. The mental health specialist I staff may request a change in hours. The supervisor may approve and/or mandate a change in hours based on services and individual needs. All persons in this position should be prepared to work weekends and holidays.
