Our client would like to fill the position of Energy and Sustainable Expert who will be reporting to the Managing Director.

The E&S Expert shall be based in Kenya.

Provide E&S Strategic and Operational management on all projects.

The E&S Expert shall be responsible for ensuring compliance by the Fund Entities, the Fund and the Investments with Applicable E&S Laws, and other Investor’s E&S Standards and with relevant environmental and social legislation and international conventions.

The E&S Expert will be responsible for such compliance with respect to all process elements of project development, i.e. assessment, management, monitoring & evaluation, and reporting.

JOB DESCRIPTION

1.     Custodian of the Company Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS). This document shall be updated periodically to ensure that it complies with all local regulations and any other matters that shall be agreed upon by the company and the Investors

2.     Organize, resource, lead and monitor E&S Activities throughout the lifecycle of the project.

3.     Ensure that all projects meet the Environmental and Social Governance policies of the company as well as the various investors.

4.     Approve the Social and Environmental Due Diligence of all projects.

5.     Monitor and report on the implementation of the ESG policies and requirements

6.     Prepare Quarterly ESG reports

7.     Obtain consent from investors related to various ESG policies and/or amendments as required

8.     The ESG specialist is also responsible for the implementation of the EDGE programme, the appointment of EDGE Auditors as well as managing the EDGE system of GBCSA related to the company projects.

9.     Provide strategic advice to management in the support of real estate projects, identifying risks, benchmarking & market intelligence with respect to construction and technical services

10.  Track projects to ensure that they are in compliance with all E&S Standards Report to senior management on the actual status of projects & risks as observed and recommend mitigation measures if projects are off schedule & off-budget.

11.  Peer review of technical work presented by third party consultants and/or development partners through the development life cycle

12.  E&S Technical due diligence of prospective projects

13.  Prepare standard operating procedures, policies and manuals for construction & technical services in E&S

14.  Conduct E&S technical reviews through the development cycle

15.  Prepare RFPs for E&S technical & specialized disciplines

16.  Monitor statutory compliance of E&S technical services by vendors

17.  Liaise with E&S technical audits as required

18.  Ensure quality assurance with respect to E&S technical services

19.  Benchmark construction & technical best practices and application of the same to the QD portfolio

20.  Together with external parties, manage, monitor and implement the required E&S certifications at different stages of the development cycle

Bachelor’s degree in Environment and Social studies or equivalent

Master’s degree in a related discipline desirable

Minimum 8 years of experience

Have demonstrated experience in Kenya and preferably in the affordable housing sector,

Have practical knowledge of Applicable E&S Laws and preferably also with various DFI E&S Standards. EIB, KFW, OPIC etc

ACCOUNTABILITY

• Ensure that development projects are E&S technically viable and compliant with the applicable laws and regulations.
• Custodian of the ESMS, ensure that it is current and in operation
• Ensure that all Fund drawdowns are in compliance with the E&S Requirements and formally provide sign-of for each drawdown
• Build a knowledge base, develop and improve tools and methods, and share information across projects
• Implement project status reporting structures and systems
• Overview of the performance of the company technical partners and consultants the portfolio and promote the highest level of performance in terms of cost, quality and time
