Job Description

What Makes This Role Special

This is a Staff-level role — not just an expert coder, but a leader who can:

  • Define and own backend architecture across multiple systems or domains.
  • Drive engineering culture by mentoring others and shaping standards.
  • Be a go-to person for technical guidance, complex debugging, and high-stakes decision making.
  • Influence not only what we build, but how we build it — from tools to processes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement robust, scalable, high-performance backend systems, APIs, and services using best-in-class architecture practices.
  • Take ownership of system-wide components, from planning to deployment and monitoring.
  • Collaborate closely with product owners, frontend teams, DevOps, and architects to translate business needs into engineering solutions.
  • Review and approve complex code changes, ensuring maintainability, performance, and security.
  • Lead and participate in system-wide debugging, profiling, and performance tuning efforts.
  • Drive the technical direction of backend projects, including the selection of frameworks, design of APIs, and service boundaries.
  • Mentor engineers in clean code practices, domain-driven design, and performance-first development.
  • Support the team during on-call duties and help lead effective incident responses and postmortems.
  • Help define and enforce technical standards, review pull requests, and uphold best practices in version control, CI/CD, and automated testing.
  • Contribute to the evolution of development pipelines, test strategies, and deployment tooling.
  • Assist in recruitment by conducting technical interviews and coding assessments.

Qualifications

Who You Are:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8+ years of backend development experience, including designing distributed systems.
  • Strong command of OOP principles, software architecture, and design patterns.
  • Advanced knowledge and hands-on experience with PHP — experience in other backend languages is a plus.
  • Proven track record working with microservices and APIs
  • Deep understanding of high-concurrency systems, load balancing, and asynchronous processing.
  • Strong experience with databases (MySQL/PostgreSQL) and caching strategies.
  • Experience with message brokers like RabbitMQ,
  • Skilled in performance profiling, query optimization, and system diagnostics.
  • Familiar with Docker, Kubernetes, and container-based development environments.
  • Experience in CI/CD, automated deployments, and infrastructure-as-code workflows.
  • Excellent debugging and troubleshooting skills in production environments.

Nice-to-Haves / Preferred Skills:

  • Familiarity with real-time data streaming.
  • Experience designing APIs consumed by frontend-heavy applications (React, mobile).
  • Deep knowledge of security best practices in distributed environments.
  • Contributions to open-source backend frameworks, or internal libraries/tools.
  • Exposure to monitoring/observability stacks (like Grafana).
  • Experience with domain-driven design (DDD) and event driven architecture.
  • Working knowledge of GraphQL
