Job Description

The Southern California News Group is looking for web-savvy journalists who embrace technology, can write headlines that win audiences on Facebook, love to imagine creative ways we can use the web to tell stories and know what modern news presentation is supposed to look like on a mobile device.

We’re pretty proud of our journalism -- from investigations that win Pulitzer Prizes to breaking news that outpaces our competitors. What we need are some clever digital producers to pull it all together into top-quality presentation for SCNG’s 11 sites, including the Orange County Register and LA Daily News. Producers will optimize our journalism to reach its widest audience, including sharpening headlines, curating mobile feeds/home pages and packaging content that engages our audience with immersive storytelling, interactive graphics, photos and videos.

Producers should be able to apply a deep understanding of search and social user behavior to help our work be surfaced on those platforms. Producing breaking news is a top priority, as well as being able to manage push and email alerts as needed.

You will use wire-editing skills to curate national news of the day for home and section pages, as well as finding the best content from our regional network of newsrooms and other sources in ways that are relevant to our audience.

These journalists are often the first and only read on stories during overnight and early morning shifts, and should have the requisite news judgment and editing skills to run the show responsibly.


Required skills

  • Strong news judgment.

  • Basic journalistic reporting, writing and editing skills.

  • Strong understanding of SEO and how to leverage it to build audience for our content, including headline and caption writing and use of keywords and taxonomy.

  • Strong understanding of social media and knowledge of how to use it to manage core accounts such as Twitter and Facebook as well as listening and curating social conversations.

  • Ability to create and enhance digital content using tools such as JS Timeline, Google maps, Storify, ScribbleLive, etc.

  • Basic knowledge of analytics and how to use them in digital decision making.

  • Understanding of fair use, copyright laws and media ethics. Emphasis on knowledge regarding social media terms of service.

  • Strong computer skills and understanding of how to use smartphones for reporting

Preferred skills

  • Some experience writing HTML

  • Experience with data analysis and visualizations

  • Experience with WordPress

  • Ability to create and edit video
