Job Description

SCNG has an opening for a City Editor for the San Gabriel Valley News Group in Monrovia, CA. This supervisory position that oversees 11 reporters for the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Pasadena Star-News and Whittier Daily News. The editor will work with reporters on a daily basis to develop a strong local news report. This editor will be in charge of an award-winning, collaborative and hungry newsroom that is eager to tell stories in new ways.

The City Editor leads development of the best news content for the local audience. In collaboration with the digital news editor, this role will foster the local journalistic voice and vision of the newsroom. This includes assigning and developing stories with a focus on watchdog journalism, investigative reporting and breaking news.

Responsibilities include:

  • Monitoring news as it happens

  • Triggering breaking news plans as warranted and coordinating coverage for all platforms - digital and print

  • Managing print and digital production for local news, push alerts and social media for the local news content as needed

  • Managing daily copy flow, story placement budgets and advance planning

While focusing deeply on advancing local journalism, the editor will also collaborate with other editors across SCNG on regional stories and SCNG-wide projects. This position reports directly to the Senior Editor.

Qualifications

We want someone with a passion for beat reporting who can help reporters uncover stories that will make an impact in the diverse communities we cover. Traditional wordsmith, organizational and collaborative skills are a must. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced manager in a smaller organization looking to move to the metro level. The successful candidate will be an experienced and innovative journalist who is comfortable with print as well as digital platforms and operations. Ideal candidates will have:

  • Newsroom leadership experience, including managing reporters

  • Strong news judgment

  • Reporting, writing and editing skills, including mastery of AP style

  • Basic understanding of SEO and how to leverage it to build audience for our content

  • Basic understanding of social media and knowledge of social media terms of service

  • Basic knowledge of and ability to assign digital enhancements such as JS Timeline, Google maps, Storify, Tout, ScribbleLive, etc

  • Deep understanding of the use of print graphics and other story elements

  • Basic knowledge of analytics and how to use them in digital decision making

  • Understanding of fair use, copyright laws and media ethics
