Digital Divide Data (DDD) is a US-based non-profit, mission-driven enterprise with the goal of using technology and digital skills to bridge the divide between economically and socially marginalized youth and employment opportunities that lead to a sustainable and viable future. DDD identifies talented but underserved youth in Africa and Asia (Kenya, Cambodia, and Laos are the main centers) to enter formal employment, undergo professional training and skills development, and pursue tertiary education. Our headquarters are in New York, and we have over 1,500 employees across our operations in Kenya, Cambodia, and Laos.

Purpose of the role

The Linguist performs quality translation, copy edit tasks, and on-demand video tasks, and ensures that the work is performed at a satisfactorily high standard within the specified deadlines and quality level; ensures that the Language Process is being followed when executing all tasks.

Job Description

  • Performing on-demand translation tasks 
  • Performing transcreation/translation/post-editing tasks 
  • Performing other translation-related admin tasks 
  • Managing project-related queries
  • Preparing, managing, and maintaining the language materials (including glossaries, Style Guides, and work instruction) up to quality standards and up to date
  • Interacting with clients on linguistic matters as required
  • Ensuring good interaction among team members and resolving questions on terminology and language matters
  • Participating in the development of new and improved working processes
  • Arbitrations/ RCA & LQE feedback (helping the team with filing arbitrations)
  • Achieving the goals set by the Swahili/ Hausa Team Lead

Qualifications

  • University degree in Linguist/Applied Languages.
  • Fluent in Swahili (native level), both written and spoken, and fluent in English, both written and spoken.
  • Being experienced as a translator in Mobile Apps, Search Engines, IT Consumer Products, Entertainment, Marketing, Software UI, and Websites is a plus.
  • Excellent feel for language (source/target).
  • Knowledge of terminology in the following subject matters IT consumer products, social media, and entertainment.
  • Thorough understanding of the localization process.
  • The excellent user experience of standard software, such as Windows and Office applications and standard CAT tools (e.g. SDL Studio, XTM).
  • Ability to learn new localization tools and applications quickly.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and translators.

  • Ability to work with tight deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability and willingness to train/teach others and pass on knowledge.
  • Ability to work within a remote team.
