Job Function and Purpose

The Senior Product Manager/Director of Product owns the Diamond Kinetics’ suite of hardware and software products and services across baseball and softball.  They are responsible for innovation that is benefit-driven and ensuring on-going “product/market fit” that translates into sustainable revenue and growth to meet business goals. 

Success in this role is defined by understanding the amateur baseball and softball markets at a very deep level, identifying need gaps, quantifying the value of filling gaps and prioritizing them, working closely with the Development team to drive the innovation roadmap and collaborating with the Marketing and Business Development teams to bring innovation to the market that meets business goals.

Key Responsibilities

Know the Customer and Market

  • Understand the amateur baseball and softball markets at a very deep level through existing knowledge and developing deep insights on players, parents, coaches and influencers
  • Be the organizational expert on the market and competitors - leverage that knowledge into product strategy and innovation plans that create sustainable competitive advantage
  • Stay current on all regulatory, legal and technical partner compliance requirements relating to all aspects of “product”
  • Leverage the Customer Experience and Business Development teams as valuable information sources and partners; supplements with cost efficient market research tools as needed
  • Build and maintain broad network of relationships within amateur baseball (collegiate programs, travel organizations, youth organizations and end-users) to constantly solicit feedback and test ideas
  • Attend and contribute to organization goals for key industry trade shows and events

Analyze, Test, Learn, Adjust

  • Develop and maintain consistent end-user and customer feedback mechanisms and integrate into innovation roadmap and the product development process
  • Constantly analyze “product/market fit” and use conclusions to adjust the innovation roadmap and overall “product” offering
  • Continually analyze product usage using all available data sources and apply as a core driver of innovation plans
  • Apply fiscal rigor and discipline in quantifying potential economic value, estimating costs/time and measuring impact and ROI
  • Own the end-user product testing process – collaborate with the Customer Experience team in executing
  • “See around the corner” and understand where the market is going and build strategies and plans accordingly

Own and Drive “Product”

  • Ensure overall product strategy is in line with the overall organization strategy, supports the brand strategy and will deliver business goals
  • Own every aspect of the “product” - strategy through execution, concept through launch, hardware and software, non-electronic component to finished goods; work with Platform Engineer on electronic component elements
  • Develop, present and gain Executive Leadership agreement for major new product/feature development programs
  • Integrate the market perspective on “Tech Readiness Level” research and development projects to help the Development team prioritize and shape for maximum market impact
  • Drive constant innovation and improvement to exceed customer and end-user expectations
  • Ensure all aspects of product meet regulatory, legal and technical partner compliance requirements
  • Coordinate, establish and manage budgets for new products, services and features
  • Collaborating with the CTO, lead and own the innovation roadmap process; employ contingency planning and creativity in overcoming barriers and delays
  • Develops feature migration and graceful “end of life” plans; leads the execution of them
  • Challenge the “product” value proposition continuously seeking to increase value and lower cost
  • Own the release decision on every product launch and update; take full ownership for quality and market success
  • Develop data-based secondary product and service offerings built upon core “product”

Collaborate and Communicate

  • Collaborate daily with the Development team to ensure delivery of the innovation roadmap on-time, on-budget and with completeness
  • Work closely and cohesively with the Marketing and Customer Experience teams to optimize the product, support assets and processes to ensure customers and end-users are delighted with their product experience
  • Ensure the Business Development team has all the product knowledge and customer support resources necessary to successfully execute the business development strategy
  • Own all product-related communications including technical specifications, labeling, release notes, tutorial content, etc.
  • Contributes as an active member of the Commercial Leadership team and with Development team in sprint planning and stand-up’s; documents and shares decisions, status and plan adjustments to the appropriate audiences
  • Participates as needed with the Executive Leadership team – fearlessly and tactfully challenges the status quo and alternative points of view

Create Customer Loyalty

  • Demonstrate and champion a “customer first” mentality in approach and across the organization
  • Remove product barriers to end-user on-boarding and usage
  • Optimize “product” to drive subscription conversion and retention

Experience Required For Senior Project Manager Level 

  • 6+ years experience in sporting goods, gaming and/or consumer technology with a minimum of 2 years in a product management capacity
  • B.A., B.S. or equivalent degree in Business, Sports Management, Product Management, or equivalent field of study
  • Product management experience with highly engineered and/or data-driven products
  • Repeated success in owning multiple complex projects across different products, building launch plans and leading them to market success
  • Proven success translating technical information into understandable and effective consumer language
  • Demonstrated success in collaborating across a wide range of functions, roles and personality types
  • Played baseball or softball competitively

Additional Desired Experience

  • MBA strongly preferred
  • Product management experience in a connected device and/or consumer subscription-based business
  • Experience conducting and applying consumer market research
  • Competence using SQL or similar database query tools
  • Working knowledge of Agile development process
  • Big data and machine learning familiarity with some experience in applying
  • Played baseball or softball at the Collegiate level; coaching or instruction experience a plus
  • Start-up and/or early-stage company experience

Experience Required for Director of Product Level

  • 10+ years experience in sporting goods, gaming and/or consumer technology with a minimum of 3 years leading a team of Product Managers
  • Success in recruiting, hiring, training and developing a high-performance team
  • Experience evaluating rapidly developing new technologies and integrating into product roadmap while appropriately managing risk/reward 
  • Successful experience managing some/all elements of the product supply chain including supplier selection and management, contract negotiation and international logistics
  • Product management experience in a connected device and/or consumer subscription-based business
