Job Description

Café Attendant – Samuel’s Café

Location: Samuel’s Café, UPEI Campus Library
Position Type: Food Service / Café Operations

Position Overview

Samuel’s Café, located within the UPEI campus library, is looking for a friendly, energetic and dependable Café Attendant to independently operate the café and provide an exceptional experience for students, staff and visitors.

This is a highly customer-facing role where you will be responsible for running the café independently, preparing crafted hot and cold beverages, serving fresh baked goods, soups and pizzas, maintaining a clean and inviting space, and ensuring customers receive fast, friendly and consistent service.

The ideal candidate is confident working independently, comfortable in a fast-paced environment, and able to think ahead, prioritize tasks and solve problems as they arise.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate Samuel’s Café independently during assigned shifts

  • Provide friendly, professional and engaging customer service

  • Prepare and serve a variety of crafted hot and cold beverages

  • Serve and merchandise baked goods, soups, pizzas and other café offerings

  • Process customer orders and payments accurately

  • Maintain consistent food and beverage quality and presentation

  • Keep the café, service areas and equipment clean, organized and well stocked

  • Monitor inventory and recognize when products or supplies need to be replenished

  • Prepare for busy periods by looking ahead and completing tasks proactively

  • Respond quickly and professionally to customer questions, concerns and special requests

  • Troubleshoot day-to-day operational issues and know when to escalate concerns

  • Follow all food safety, sanitation and workplace safety procedures

  • Complete opening, closing and daily operational duties as required

  • Help create a welcoming atmosphere within the UPEI campus library

  • Support promotions, specials and café initiatives as needed

What We’re Looking For

  • Strong customer service and communication skills

  • Comfortable working independently and taking ownership of the café

  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment

  • Strong organizational and time-management skills

  • Ability to multitask and prioritize during busy periods

  • A proactive mindset with the ability to look ahead and anticipate what needs to be done

  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills

  • Positive, approachable and professional personality

  • Comfortable handling cash, POS systems and customer transactions

  • Previous café, food service, hospitality or customer service experience is an asset

  • Food safety certification is an asset

The Ideal Candidate

You are someone who enjoys interacting with people and takes pride in creating a great customer experience. You don't wait to be told what needs to be done. You notice when the café is getting busy, when stock is running low or when something needs attention, and you take action.

Because this location is operated independently, initiative, reliability, problem-solving and the ability to stay organized without direct supervision are essential.
