Job Description
Position Summary
Reporting to the Operations Manager, the HVAC-R & General Maintenance Technician is responsible for performing preventative maintenance, diagnostics, repairs, and installations on HVAC-R systems and related building equipment at client facilities. This role ensures all work is completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with applicable codes, regulations, and company standards while delivering exceptional customer service.
The successful candidate will work independently and collaboratively to maintain mechanical, electrical, and building systems while supporting operational excellence across client sites.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on HVAC-R systems, including air conditioning units, furnaces, boilers, HRVs, domestic heating systems, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and associated equipment.
- Complete inspections, diagnostics, troubleshooting, repairs, and system testing.
- Perform routine maintenance including filter changes, coil cleaning, belt replacement, pulley and bearing replacement, pump maintenance, combustion testing, balancing, and system adjustments.
- Review and complete work orders through computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
- Conduct site inspections, risk assessments, and pre-job safety planning.
- Ensure compliance with applicable building codes, safety regulations, environmental standards, and company policies.
- Estimate labour, materials, and resources required to complete maintenance and repair activities.
- Coordinate with planners and vendors to source materials and equipment required for assigned work.
- Maintain accurate service records, maintenance reports, and documentation.
- Support minor electrical work and assist with small project scopes as required.
- Communicate effectively with clients, contractors, vendors, and internal stakeholders.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior maintenance staff and apprentices.
- Participate in emergency response and after-hours support as required.
Qualifications
Qualifications
- Red Seal 313A Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Certification required.
- Gas Technician 2 (G2) required; Gas Technician 1 (G1) considered a strong asset.
- Ozone Depletion Prevention (ODP/ODS) Certification required.
- Minimum 3 years of related HVAC-R maintenance and service experience.
- Post-secondary education in HVAC, Mechanical Systems, Building Operations, or a related field is considered an asset.
- UA Local 787 membership in good standing is considered an asset.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driver's abstract.
- Ability to obtain and maintain applicable security clearances, including a clear criminal record check.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong knowledge of HVAC-R systems, boilers, pumps, motors, air handling units, building automation systems (BAS), life safety systems, and associated mechanical equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical, electrical, control, and construction drawings.
- Experience using CMMS platforms and Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and deadlines.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and within a team environment.
- Professional and customer-focused approach to service delivery.
- Ability to remain calm and effective in high-pressure situations.
Working Conditions
- Frequent walking, standing, bending, kneeling, reaching, and climbing.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Comfortable working at heights and using ladders or elevated work platforms.
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Participation in an on-call rotation may be required.
- Ability to travel between client sites as required.
