Job Description

Purpose of the Role 

Reporting directly to the Building Operations Supervisor, the Building Operator maintains mechanical and electrical equipment such as laboratory equipment, chillers, boilers and air handlers to provide services to the Forensic Service and Coroner’s Complex.

Principal Accountabilities 

  • Monitors operation, adjusts, and maintains mechanical equipment such as chillers, boilers, air handlers and pumps to provide chilled water, steam, hot water and air conditioning to the facility 

  • Maintains water treatment plant, medical vacuum and RO/DI system 

  • Performs preventative and regular maintenance as outlined by maintenance system ‘Concept’ which are issued weekly 

  • Oversees 3rd party contractors for the safe and compliant operation, maintenance both corrective and preventive.  

  • Regulation of equipment 

  • Visual, audio and physical checks 

  • Works with the Quality Management system 

  • Other Responsibilities 

  • Participate in educational programs and in-service trainings. 

  • Attends meetings as required 

  • As a key member of the Building Operations team, the successful candidate is required to be on call according to a published schedule. Successful candidate may occasionally be required to work weekends and some overtime. 

  • Completes assigned tasks in a professional and workmanlike manner. and close the work orders within time frame given in response time policy 

  • Communicate the work status with the client groups via central call center within the time frame given in response time policy 

  • Adheres to the occupational health and safety acts and other legislative enactment  

  • The building engineer also responds to Fire Alarms as part of the fire response team 

  • Perform other related duties as required and as assigned by the supervisor or manager 

Qualifications

  • Must have initiative and the ability to work on own 

  • Laboratory experience is an asset 

  • Positive outlook, good communication and interpersonal skills are required 

  • Must be computer literate 

  • Certificate of Building Environmental Systems - Operator Class One & Two or SMT or Stationary Engineer 4th/5th Class or equivalent; 

  • 3-5 years hands on experience in general maintenance in a commercial, laboratory equipment or industrial environment; 

  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical/electrical blueprints; 

  • Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act, knowledge of Workplace Hazardous Materials Information Systems (WHMIS) and First Aid and CPR training; 

  • Knowledge of Provincial Building Code & Regulations, Canadian Electrical Code, Provincial Fire Code and Electrical Safety Authority; 

  • Computer literate. Knowledge of CMMS is an asset.
