Based in a world class Kobes camp facility, the regular shift for this position is 20 days on and 10 days off, with 11 - 12 hour days depending on operational needs. Transportation is provided to site from Edmonton, Fort St. John, and Grande Prairie. 

Make an Impact
The First Cook is responsible for preparing and cooking all main meals as per requirements; and ensuring all meals are prepared and served on time to the highest standards of Horizon North. 

The Relief Chef is responsible for preparing, presenting, and serving top quality meals according to menu specifications. This position will include relief duties for the Chef on a regular basis. 

This position is safety sensitive and requires drug and alcohol testing and a fitness assessment as a condition of employment. 

What you'll do

• Ensure proper equipment operation/maintenance and ensures proper safety and sanitation in kitchen according to FOOD SAFE protocol. Complying with and ensuring food hygiene regulations are carried out accordance with Food Safety Act
• Incorporate into preparation any requests to comply with special dietary constraints
• Provide Relief Coverage for Chef, 2nd Cook and Baker/Breakfast on occasion
• Ensure food costs are controlled and groceries are utilized effectively
• Supervise Staff in the Chef’s absence; Provide mentorship and training to new staff
• Stocking / Inventory / assisting with unloading, loading and placing of groceries and supplies
• Ensure paperwork and inventories are accurately completed and forwarded to head office as instructed.
• Assist Leadership in performing administrative tasks (i.e ordering the supplies from our suppliers in the chef’s absence).
• Promote Horizon North Workplace Health & Safety Initiatives
• Cater to dietary restrictions of clients
• Change menu options quickly to adapt to grocery order issues
• Additional duties and responsibilities as required

• You have formal culinary training – Journeyman ‘Red Seal’ Certification preferred
• You have the SafeCheck advanced food safety certification or HACCP certification is an asset. 
• You have 5 years of cooking experience in a similar or hotel/institutional environment preferred
• Ideally, you have Food Safe, First Aid, and WHMIS
• You are fluent in English with excellent written and verbal communication skills and comprehension
• You have exceptional organizational, interpersonal and analytical skills; and superior initiative and attitude
• You are able to prioritize multiple demands and have a strong customer service focus
• You have excellent problem solving skills
• You have an ability and desire to work independently with minimal supervision, and as a team player
• You have knowledge of computer programs (Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Sysco, Outlook)
• You have thorough knowledge of food products, standard recipes and proper preparation methods
• You have an excellent practical and theoretical background in all areas of the kitchen i.e: Hot Kitchens, Cold Kitchens, Pastry / Bakery, Butchery and Banquets dealing with large numbers of guests
• You are able to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment
