Job Description

The Carpenters Helper assists tradespersons in the construction of structures made of wood, wood substitutes, steel and other materials. This is a safety sensitive position, and as such requires pre-employment and pre-access drug and alcohol testing.

Based in our Calgary manufacturing plant, the regular shift for this position is Monday to Friday, 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM. Hours of work and shift schedule may be modified subject to business requirements. Successful candidates must have flexibility to accommodate changes to work schedule.

This is a contract role going until mid-November, with a possibilty of becoming extended or permanent.

What you’ll do

  • Able to assemble basic carpentry elements with supervision.
  • Assist tradesmen and production workers on site to carry out work on new manufactured and renovated buildings.
  • Interior renovation work includes the following:Remove paneling, remove walls, pound staples, and remove studs. Install sheets of drywall to interior and insulate. Measure, cut, shape, assemble and join moldings, wood materials, drywall and plastic materials
  • Exterior renovation work includes the following: Remove sheeting, remove nails, pound staples/nails and re-nail sheeting. Nail on sheets of plywood to framework.Use of scaffolding is often necessary.
  • Need to possess knowledge of the operation of a coil nailer and in some cases a simplex jack.
  • Roof work includes the following: Inspect and wear fall protection gear. Remove sheets, remove joists and remove insulation.Install and remove framing, install and remove insulation. Under sheathing work includes the following: Ensure building is properly positioned on cribbing. Remove sheets/joists, insulations. Wear particle mask.
  • Framing work includes the following: General layout and construction of walls and building.
  • Understand all safety procedures of workplace.
    These tasks require work with the following tools: sawsall, skill saw, chop saw, table saw, radial arm saw, drills and air tools.
  • Cleans and stores tools and equipment and cleans work sites.
  • Completes daily Job Hazards Assessments and Pre-Job Task Hazard Analysis forms.
  • Wears required Personal Protective Equipment at all times during work hours.
  • Performs other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Qualifications

Who you are

  • Work requires an education background normally equivalent to high school with some knowledge of the construction/ manufacturing industry.
  • Experience as a carpenter is required. 
  • Minimum of 6 months basic carpentry experience and/or experience working on construction sites.
  • Able to operate all hand and power tools required to perform tasks specific to trade.
  • Able to demonstrate organizational, time-management and decision-making skills.
  • Able to manage a fluctuating workload and set priorities to meet deadlines.
  • Able to work individually and as a team member
  • Able to safely and comfortably carry out physical duties
    Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Attention to health/safety of self and co-workers.
  • Trained, as necessary, in required safety protocols.
  • Uses ladders as required.
  • Perform heavy manual labor, including bending, stooping, reaching, carrying and lifting heavy objects weighing up to 45 lbs.
  • Requires manual dexterity of both hands and feet to perform activities such as lifting overhead, twisting and bending while lifting, climbing ladders and stairs while wearing protective equipment, and working in confined spaces, including repetitive arm motion below, at, and above shoulder level.
  • Walks approximately 2-4 kilometers per day on a variety of surfaces including, concrete and gravel.
