Auburn-Washburn Unified School District 437 is a district consisting of 128 square miles of suburban and rural areas in southwest Topeka and Shawnee county. Presently, we have 13 total attendance centers — one early childhood center, seven elementary schools, one middle school, one high school, and two alternative learning centers.

Auburn-Washburn Food Service Apprentice Program
We understand that the job market can be a bit confusing and a little scary to jump into. We would like to provide you an opportunity to learn job skills while working with a great team of people that love what we do. Our District operates some of the busiest kitchens in town, producing over 5000 meals a day for our students. We would like to hire 20 young people, new to the workforce or have little job experience, to be a part of our busy team. While working with us, we will teach job skills and build your confidence.

- Nutrition 101 course
- Expectations of behavior and performance
- Working as a “Team” holding up your end
- Following directions/asking the right questions
- Eight hour course in food safety
- Meal components/ what makes a meal
- Certification by Institute of Child Nutrition
Hands on Training
- Fresh Produce Preparation
- Preparing Salads
- Baking Breads and Other Products
- Main Dish/Entree Cooking
- Setup and Serving Lines
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Assist in serving of food in an efficient, safe, and pleasant manner.
2. Assume responsibility for seeing to it that during meal service periods the supply of foods offered is replenished regularly.
3. Assist in the daily clean-up of the kitchen and service areas.
4. Perform major cleaning of refrigerators and storerooms at regularly scheduled intervals as designated by the site manager.
5. Assume responsibility for storage labeling, and disposal of unused foods after recording.
6. Must be able to read and interpret instructions on recipes.
7. Prepare foods that are attractive, tasty, nutritious and safe by following safe food handling techniques and tasting, garnishing, and inspecting foods.
8. Adhere to the dress code established by the food service site manager.
9. Must be able to work on feet for at least six hours daily and must be able to lift up to fifty pounds to carry short distances.
10. Perform other duties as assigned by Food Service Site Manager or Supervisor of Food Service.
11. Regular attendance is required.
SALARY: $10.00/hour
TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: 8 hours/day, 9 months/year (to include all days that school is in session)
REPORTS TO: Food Service Site Manager
EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually by the Food Service Site Manager and the Supervisor of Food Service.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Demonstrated aptitude for successful performance of the tasks listed.
3. Good personal appearance and cleanliness.
4. Evidence of initiative, ingenuity, loyalty, and willingness to cooperate.
5. Demonstrated ability to assume responsibility for “main dish” preparation, baking or vegetable preparation.
6. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as are determined to be appropriate and acceptable.
