Job Description

Design Science is noted as one of the top human factors usability consulting firms for some of the most respected pharmaceutical and medical device companies in the world.  We're looking for a Design Director with experience in design research and product design to drive a strong team through continued growth and success.

What you will do

 As Leader of the Design Function the Design Director: 

  • Oversees the execution design deliverables and projects
  • May serve as Tech Lead on design-related projects
  • Performs people management tasks for the team (formal check-ins, calibration, performance communication, development plans)
  • Develops procedures and training that communicate the “What’s” and compliance for the design function
  • Owns client communication and initiation of projects
  • Creates proposals and project plans to satisfy client objectives
  • Sets timelines and budget and manages resources for design projects
  • Performs organizational inventory and succession planning
  • Develops and maintains hiring strategy
  • Drives strategic planning for the design organization

 

      

Qualifications

You must have:

  • 5-7 years related experience in a lead design role

  • Demonstrated experience with Design Research is required

  • Ability to articulate the design process as it relates to product design

  • Demonstrated understanding of the process preferably with prior industrial design experience

  • MS/MFA in industrial design; graphic design; communications design, or related field required.
  • Bachelor's degree in related fields will also be considered with 6 years of related professional experience.

  • 3+ years of experience collaborating with internal or external stakeholders and/or clients.
  • Ability to apply design-based knowledge and skills to expertly interpret, synthesize, and translate data into actionable information.
  • Extreme proficiency in Adobe applications (Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop required; additional beneficial), Microsoft Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel).
  • Ability to work full time at the Design Science office in Philadelphia, PA
  • The finalist must be able to successfully pass a background check.

Additional Desired Skills and Experience:                                           

  • Creative thinker with sensitivity for data visualization and product design
  • Evidence of the ability to balance multiple projects simultaneously and work in a fast-paced consultancy
  • Evidence of collaboration with colleagues in other disciplines such as software development, mechanical and electrical engineering, human factors, cognitive psychology, and marketing
  • Working general knowledge of human factors and ethnography
