The African Medical Centre of Excellence, Abuja (AMCE Abuja), a multi-specialty medical institution developed by Afreximbank in partnership with King's College Hospital London (KCH) aims to revolutionize healthcare in Africa. The Centre will offer comprehensive services in oncology, haematology, cardiovascular care, and general healthcare across the continent, with plans for expansion. The construction phase, supported by global partners, precedes a phased rollout over six years, evolving into a 500-bed facility.
Set to commence operations in early 2025, this flagship facility in Abuja is a key part of Afreximbank’s network of healthcare facilities, actively countering brain drain, reducing medical tourism by offering advanced procedures such as stem cell transplantation and state-of-the-art treatments for various diseases, and fostering employment opportunities. Job Description
Job Purpose
The medical library assistant is responsible for working with the librarian in managing health sciences collections, participating in the development of instructional materials, and providing reference and research support to healthcare providers.
The successful candidate will be familiar with modern library procedures, databases, and medical terminologies, and will have a passion for delivering quality services to our stakeholders.
Core Responsibilities
- Work with the Librarian in managing and maintaining the organization’s collection of medical books, journals, and documents.
- Must know how to keep information current and update databases as time progresses. Must sort info and keep it organized.
- Managing books, periodicals, audio and video recordings and digital resources, including cataloging, organization and storage functions.
- Register the hospital as an institution on research and educational access repositories
- Assist medical professionals, students, and researchers with literature searches and reference questions
- Develop and implement library policies and procedures
- Conduct training sessions to educate users on how to access and utilize library resources
- Collaborate with other medical librarians to share resources and knowledge
- Stay updated on the latest health information resources and technologies
- Participate in collection, development and storage of educational activities
- Provide research support and instruction in evidence-based practice
- Collecting, organizing, and issuing library resources such as books, films, and audio files.
Qualifications
Educational Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Library sciences.
Professional Requirements
- A certification as a hospital librarian is an added advantage
Experience Requirements
- 2 to 5 years progressive experience working in a hospital / University library
- Progressive experience in customer service in the medical/academic environment
Knowledge Requirements
- Experience in a health sciences library or similar environment
- Knowledge of medical terminologies and databases
- Proficient in the use of digital library systems
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills
Skill Requirements
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with customers and team members.

- Proficiency in customer relationship management (CRM) systems and other relevant software
