    Job Description

    Summarised Description of the Role:

    • Define, design (including the consolidation of the capability across the T&L) and establish / and deliver on tax dispute resolution practice within a specialist African-focused multinational tax practice, spanning all areas other than those restricted to attorneys/advocates in practice.  The main responsibilities focus on mediation and problem solving for clients.
    • Transformation, Succession planning, diversity and inclusion form critical aspects within both this role, and the broader firm.
    • As a leader in this practice, eminence and thought leadership are critical for this role. This also implies building capability and capacity to deliver on assignments.

    Roles and Responsibilities:

    • Business development – development and maintenance of a solid client base.
    • Define, design (including the consolidation of the capability across the T&L) and Establish / consolidate and deliver the strategy for the tax dispute resolution practice.
    • Recruit staff for the tax dispute resolution practice, internally and externally.
    • Build and maintain strong relationships, both within the Tax &Legal practice; the broader firm, including global and with clients.
    • Identify opportunities and implement improvements in the company’s processes, procedures and standard documentation (templates, etc.), across the various tax and legal divisions of the firm, as these relate to tax dispute resolution. 
    • Building capability  targeted at a broad audience within the tax department of the firm
    • Resolve client dissatisfaction/disputes , within the Tax & Legal Service Line , that have the potential to result in professional indemnity insurance / negligence claims and/or reputational damage.
    • Deliver on specific tax projects (eg. New business development projects, projects involving expanding the range of legal privilege to client documentation and meetings).

    Although primarily based in Johannesburg, the role may require certain limited travel to other offices of the firm and/or their clients, within South Africa and to a lesser extent East and West Africa as a whole.  The candidate may voluntarily work from the Cape Town or any other national office for up to six weeks in the year (except other than when necessary to do so for business requirements), and may additionally work remotely for up to two months in the year from any location (subject to client requirements).

    Qualifications

    Qualifications / Education Requirements and Experience:

    • Chartered Accountant (SA) and/or Admitted Attorney, with a minimum of fifteen years PQE, and previous experience in a similar role within a ‘Big 4’ Accounting Firm and/or major South African Law Firm. Post-graduate tax qualifications and management qualifications (e.g. MBA and/or BA Psychology) preferred.  Previous South African Revenue Services work experience preferred.

    Skill Requirements:

    • Legal skills, including PAJA and constitutional aspects relevant to the tax field.
    • In depth understanding of the TAA and the applicable TDR legislation within TAA.
    • Financial/numerical skills
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills – which include the ability to influence and persuade
    • Innovative problem-solving
    • Developmental leadership, with excellent teaching/training ability
    • Strong negotiator, including the ability to do probability modelling and similar analysis to guide clients in the settlement decision-making process
    • Must thrive in high-conflict and high-stress situations, with the ability to remain calm and de-escalate conflict during negotiations and/or other in-person interactions during the overall dispute lifecycle
    • Results oriented, with the ability to meet tight deadlines and re-prioritise matters based on objective and/or legal urgency standards.
