Job Description

Main Purpose of Job
To manage the team/s within sphere of responsibility in the effective delivery of services in terms of thought leadership and insights development, economic research and analysis and eminence building for Deloitte Africa.

Differentiators for this specific role
Research & Thought Leadership Development

  • Working with the Associate Director to implement the thought leadership (TL) strategy for Deloitte Africa
  • Serving as project leader, lead author or subject matter expert (SME) for research and TL centrally developed in the Growth Office
  • Overseeing and approving the scoping, research and data collection, data analysis, writing, and production of insights and TL publications in the GO as per the Deloitte Africa TL Strategy priority themes and strategic objectives
  • Serving as a TL/research expert to guide production of TL reports (aligned to the Deloitte Africa TL Strategy or global Signature Issues) developed outside of the GO, including guiding practitioners in the firm to access insights, research tools, service providers, etc.
  • Supporting other functions with messaging, final packaging and dissemination of Deloitte Africa-developed TL publications
  • Conducting primary research, including survey-based research, through for example, CxO interviews; designing/ reviewing/approving survey tools and research questions, and general oversight  
  • Conducting desktop research literature reviews on identified topics, as well as overview/analyses of competitor TL/Insights on similar topics
  • Drawing insights from various forms of data collected throughout the research process, in the form of concise and engaging storytelling
  • Managing third-party suppliers where relevant
  • Overseeing and providing quality control, and management of junior staff and cross-business stakeholders on projects and publications
  • Engaging with internal teams (e.g., industry teams, CxO teams, etc.) to share information and keep these abreast of the latest industry trends and developments as required
  • Providing input into and approving the content design and output medium to ensure that the desired outcomes may be achieved as per the Deloitte Africa TL strategy
  • Compiling (or guiding the business on preparing) relative derivative content from TL reports (videos, summary reports, client presentations)
  • Identifying white spaces/niche areas by keeping abreast of key trends/topics of interest to Deloitte clients, in support of the Deloitte Africa TL strategy

Economic research, modelling and analysis 

  • Research economic and commercial issues to provide fact-based commentary on South Africa and leading African economies, industries and sectors, aligned to business and service line needs, TL publications, etc
  • Managing and authoring the development of economic outlook reports and other economic analysis for flagship publications 
  • Supporting the Deloitte Africa Chief Economist as well as client teams as an economist/SME relating to economic outlooks, macro-economic forecasts, economic trends and risks, including analysis of economic data, and modelling techniques (including I-O, SAM and CGE models) 

Presentation development support and delivery

  • Receive brief or topic from Associate Director. or other P/Ds in the firm for the presentation (for board/exco/client or strategic events)
  • Where required, engage with supporting team in the business or GO to collaborate on presentation development/ manage resources that will assist with preparation development including setting expectations, reviewing content, creative elements/design, etc.
  • Create presentation based on conducted research, incorporate reviewer’s inputs and finalise incorporating feedback
  • Where required, delivery of presentation to internal or client audience

  • Interrogates, clearly understands and communicates to team the agreed strategic objectives of both own Service Area and that of the client Service Line/s
  • Manages the implementation of the strategic imperatives in line with service area strategy relating to:

→ Implementation of change initiatives within designated area/s
→ Management of the implementation of plan on a day-to-day basis with team
→ Monitoring skills level in team relating to required outputs, assisting as necessary
→ Clear and regular communication with superior and team on implementation status 

  • Supports own Service Line leadership in carrying out EXCO mandate 
  • Builds professional relationships within service line/s to understand business needs in area/s of responsibility
  • Generates and implements innovative ideas and solutions within area of responsibility in collaboration with team members to enhance / renew service offerings

Budgets and Forecast

  • Provides input into annual budget to superior for drafting of budget for Service Area
  • Manages expenditure within team and ensures time and expenses are submitted weekly
  • Monitor that completion and submission of the budget
  • Prepare Budget and forecast Africa Exco reports with results analysis
  • Prepare Budget and forecast Africa Board packs with results analysis

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Masters degree in economics, econometrics, commerce or similar

  • Masters degree in economics, econometrics, commerce or similar

Minimum Experience    

  • 10 years’ working experience within the relevant function

Desired Experience    

  • 10+ years’ experience in research and analysis, industry research, thought leadership (TL), story-telling and insights production, economic modelling; good knowledge of Deloitte strategic priorities; minimum of 4 years at Manager level within similar function
