Main Purpose of Job

  • Support the Indirect Tax Senior Team in providing professional and robust advice on all VAT matters, with a strong understanding of VAT industry issues.
  • Strategic Impact: Supports the Manager on delivery of designated engagement / project, managing the implementation of the agreed deliverables
  • Raises issues with manager as identified in area of focus that may affect the quality of delivery or timelines of the engagement 
  • Identifies opportunities for follow-on work and works with management to win the business
  • Assists in development of client presentations / discussion documentation
  • Actively builds business relationships that generate leads
  • Gathers information to understand broader offerings of Deloitte and seeks opportunities for cross-selling
  • Raises solutions to address issues in area of expertise that may enhance / renew service offerings to client
  • Identifies client's needs, and underlying business and industry issues, by asking relevant, specific questions and makes recommendations to Mastery level specialists
  • Recognizes current VAT laws and jurisprudence and their impact on clients
  • Develops standard VAT products/services within the VAT practice by using resources in one’s local firm
  • Identifies products/services delivered at local and global VAT level and key industries for the global VAT practice
  • Identifies opportunities to integrate VAT and industry service offerings
  • Collaborates with the departments of authorities, familiarizing self with local tax organizational structure, responsibilities, rights and obligations of both taxpayers and tax authorities
  • Contacts and liaises with tax authorities on administrations issues
  • Prepares and collates supporting documentation to be submitted to tax authorities on client’s behalf
  • Attends meetings with local tax authorities and actively contributes; takes responsibility to follow up with tax authorities
  • Prepares specific documentation to support client’s position in discussion with authorities
  • Researches top relevant VAT court cases, locally and internationally
  • Understands the basic principles and structure of legislation and related concentration, development in law, published tax authority positions, and court cases
  • Helps identify key issues and opportunities for clients and key tax contracts in other jurisdictions
  • Articulates general implications of legislations, published views of the tax authority, and court cases
  • Helps determine non-VAT issues and proposes solutions
  • Tax Law & Rules: Provides initial recommendations based on current tax legislation across the Global Tax and Legal function to engagement leadership
  • Delivery Excellence: Demonstrates advanced knowledge of the key capabilities required to deliver a high quality service experience to the client
  • Analytical Thinking & Problem Solving: Selects appropriate methods for collecting and analysing data, and develops informed recommendations
  • Technology Tools & Solutions: Articulates how technology enables the business and communicates this effectively to clients while ensuring appropriate technologies and methodologies are used on projects
  • Compliance Planning: Drafts client deliverables on VAT matters, and proposes VAT recommendations/solutions, Understands, applies, and monitors tax returns and refunds, their implications, opportunities, and optimization
  • Prepares and monitors the tax returns and refunds process
  • Identifies relevant legislation and jurisprudence and prepares draft advice that clearly communicates technical positions
  • References rules underlying the optimization scheme when preparing tax returns and refunds
  • Researches client operations, identifies applicable legislation and jurisprudence, and prepares draft advice communicating VAT rules

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BCom or LLB Degree

Desired Qualification:

  • Postgraduate qualification in Taxation

Minimum Experience:

  • 3-5 years working experience within Accounting 
  • Experience with VAT act or regulations
  • Data Analytics experience

Desired Experience:

  • 3-5 years’ experience in a client facing role

Additional Information

Technical Competencies

  • Ability to follow instructions, understand the issues presented and apply the relevant provisions of the VAT Act in order to write clear and concise reports and opinions
  • Perform administrative and risk procedures
  • Conduct Liaison with SARS officials
