Are you a sustainability specialist/quant/actuary/scientist/engineer looking to use your skills to solve the biggest problem of our generation? We are looking for you! We are seeking applicants to join our Sustainability team. As well as understanding the challenge that climate change poses to business, you should have a passion for data-driven decision making, and experience of communicating complex problems to technical and non-technical audiences.

To support our growing sustainability practice, we are seeking management resource; an integral component of our ability to meet client demand and deliver differentiated services in this area.

Working within Sustainability Services (a practice that operates as part of Deloitte’s Risk Advisory service line), this role will provide additional depth to complement our sustainability specialists in addition to bringing additional breadth to our capabilities.

In particular, we are looking for applicants with a strong understanding of and/or experience in:

-  Climate risk

-  Decarbonisation strategy, planning and solutions

-  Circular Economy and Responsible Supply Chain

-  Environmental and social impact assessments

-  Strategy

-  Non-financial indicator assurance

-  Environmental and Social regulatory environment  

Job Description

Your role

We support a wide range of South African and global clients on their most pressing sustainability challenges and opportunities through a spectrum of offerings ranging from strategy design to independent assurance.

As a Manager within this service area, you will have responsibility for:

•  Delivering high-quality, detailed climate risk assessments, and developing adaptation and mitigation strategies for our clients.

•  Using your in-depth knowledge of climate change and decarbonisation to enable you to act in the capacity of ‘trusted advisor’ for senior client stakeholders.

•  Holding and continuing to develop fluent knowledge of climate risk, decarbonisation, and the latest developments in climate impact science.

•  Educating and advising both internal and external stakeholders on climate change, translating complex science into understandable and actionable insight.

•  Providing leadership and mentoring to junior team members and associate resources.

•  Working alongside others on all climate change & sustainability matters and industries to provide expert insight on the impact and interactions of climate change on other sustainability areas.

•  Acting in the capacity of ‘engagement manager’, taking ownership for all aspects of engagement delivery from scoping, programme and team selection through to delivery, risk & quality management and budgetary control.

•  Utilising your subject matter knowledge to lead new business development opportunities, and grow Deloitte’s sustainability offering.

•  Developing strong relationships with internal stakeholders across the firm.

Specialised Technical Capabilities:

To qualify for the role you must have:

•  Experience in risk assessment, particularly quantitative approaches to measuring risk and scenario analysis AND/OR technical knowledge of net zero strategies and decarbonisation planning

•  Strong numerical background in climate science, statistics, actuarial science, engineering, physics, geophysical analysis, or a similar discipline.

•  Understanding of the climate change policy and regulatory landscape as well as wider Environmental, Social and Governance reporting and disclosure

•  Experience in professional services / consultancy in an ‘engagement manager’ capacity OR deep subject matter expertise, such as in climate science, decarbonisation, determining of emissions factors, energy transition, or catastrophe modelling.

•  Proven experience in communicating technical subject matter to a non-technical audience.

•  Experience managing others, and supporting/mentoring team members.

•  Excellent written and oral business communication skills

•  Excellent data analysis and visualisation skills, comfortable working with large datasets, both in Excel and beyond.

•  A high aptitude for identifying, establishing and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders.

•  Ability to combine deep situational expertise offering domain expertise to make tailored recommendations that enable clients’ sustainability agendas

•  Specializes in and builds an internal expert brand within a sustainability service offering (e.g., Resource Excellence, Social Impact, Environment Health and Safety) while maintaining a minimum level of expertise across many areas

•  Leverages an in-depth industry knowledge to increase validity of clients’ sustainability issues analyses and enhance impact of recommended solutions

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications:

Appropriate B. Degree or equivalent in the following fields:

·  Environmental sciences

·  Engineering

·  Law

·  Commerce/Accounting/Cost/Auditing/Marketing/Economics

·  Computer Science/ Information Technology

·  Mathematics/ Statistics

Professional certification from a recognised professional body relevant for professional practice in the fields outlined above.

Desired qualifications:

Postgraduate/ Masters’ qualification in a field related to fields per Minimum qualifications above.

Preferred certifications – IMRSA, Ethics Institute, Sustainability Institute, IoDSA, CA (SA), ISO Certification /ITIL/TOGAF

Experience:

6+ years working experience in a relevant field to Sustainability
