About the Department

The Risk Independence & Legal function deals with any issues that potentially expose Deloitte to risk. The risk, independence and legal issues impacting the firm are varied and may include reputational, operational, litigation and regulatory risk.

Risk Management is about identifying and managing risks to the firm. This includes checks necessary to ensure that the individual professionals act and make decisions that achieve the objectives of the firm, comply with professional and legal requirements and that are ethical.

The role of Independence is not only to make sure there is an effective compliance framework in place, but also to raise awareness of the issues involved and encourage consultation whenever questions or concerns arise.

The Legal Counsel team provides internal legal assistance to the Firm in Company secretarial, disputes management, litigation and compliance.

Main Purpose of Job

Manage the team/s within sphere of responsibility in the effective delivery of services to the business. We are seeking to recruit a Legal Manager in our Internal Client Services department – Risk, Independence & Legal in East Africa.

Job Description

  • Manage the implementation of the unit’s strategic imperatives in line with service line strategy.
  • Build professional relationships within service lines to understand their business needs and provide the requisite legal advisories.  
  • Maintenance of the Deloitte legal structure and management of all company secretarial matters of Deloitte entities in East Africa.
  • Contracts management and liaising with the Deloitte Africa Legal team to ensure appropriate commercially sound contract templates are put in place while managing attendant legal risks. .
  • Management of claims, litigations, regulatory investigations and insurance claim procedures.
  • Collaborate with Africa Legal team and implementation of global initiatives while focusing on legal, confidential and financial crimes related issues.
  • Build professional relationships with the Firm’s key regulators and external lawyers.
  • Keep abreast with regulatory and technical developments in the legal profession and the region, in order to anticipate client needs, and offer value added and practical business solutions.
  • Drafting legal opinions and responding to legal enquiries from different member firms within the Deloitte network.
  • Leverage knowledge and contribute to proper knowledge management within the department.
  • Recruit, mentor and guide the legal team to ensure they are growing and remain motivated.
  • Any other tasks as may be assigned  from time to time

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Law from a reputable university.
  • A registered Advocate of the High Court of Kenya and CPS.
  • A Master’s degree will be an added advantage.
  • At least 7 years’ experience in the service industry.
  • Experience in a professional services firm, company secretarial services and employment and labour related matters will be an added advantage.
