YALI Regional Leadership Center East Africa

On July 28, 2014, the United States Government announced the creation of four Regional Leadership Centers (RLCs) in Ghana, Kenya, Senegal, and South Africa as part of the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI). Since 2015, these Centers have improved the availability and quality of leadership training programs and professional development opportunities for young African leaders. The Centers focus on engaging young leaders from a wide range of organizations and backgrounds and with a diversity of experiences.

The Regional Leadership Centers:

  • Provide Quality Leadership Training: Centers provide courses on leadership and issues across multiple sectors.
  • Support Entrepreneurship: Centers provide entrepreneurship support services, including mentoring, technology, and access to capital.
  • Enhance Professional Networking: Centers offer young leaders the opportunity to connect with each other, experienced professionals, and experts from across the region.

Deloitte East Africa, in partnership with a diverse group of private sector, public sector and NGO partners, is working with USAID to implement the Young African Leaders Initiative Regional Leadership Center in East Africa (YALI EA RLC).

We seek to hire a dynamic and motivated individual to join the team as the Resident Assistant, to be based at the YALI Center at Kenyatta University in Nairobi.

Job Description

Main Purpose of the Job

The Resident Assistant (RA) facilitates the social and personal adjustment of participants during their residency at Kenyatta University (KU). The RA develops a sense of community among participants and will be the first point of contact for any matters participants have outside the YALI training program. The RA will serve as a positive role model to the participants and enforce the rules and policies of YALI RLC EA and Kenyatta University during their residency. The RA will also act as a liaison between the participants, YALI and Kenyatta University.

Resident Assistant Duties (80%)

  • Provide an update to YALI Admissions Team every Monday on how participants’ residency is progressing.

  • Assist in the supervision of the Annex, responding to all requests and emergencies during duty hours - Remain on-call for the whole weekend.

  • Be available to residents on a daily basis to oversee their welfare issues.

  • Prepare the rooming list and assist residents in their adjustment to roommates and community living.

  • Relate well to individuals of all ethnic, racial, cultural, and religious backgrounds, encouraging better understanding of cultural diversity and individual differences at the Residential Annex.

  • Respond to all witnessed violations of YALI and Kenyatta University policies occurring within the residence or dining area. Prepare and submit the appropriate report to YALI Admissions Team within 24 hours.

  • Assist in special events where residence life, housing and dining services play an important role.

Admissions Duties (20%)

  • Facilitate and conduct online Pre-departure orientation for selected finalists.

  • Manage general Admissions & participants’ correspondence.

  • Assist in online reviews of applications.

  • Conduct phone and skype interviews for shortlisted applicants.

Technical competencies

  • Excellent leadership and management skills;

  • Strong judgement and decision making skills; and

  • Excellent verbal communication skills.

Qualifications

The applicant MUST be a YALI RLC EA Alumnus and must show knowledge of the University’s residence hall system and residence life policies and procedures.

Minimum requirements for the position:

  • Bachelor’s degree from a reputable university;

  • Minimum 1 year of relevant working experience;

  • People oriented person;

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal;

  • Well conversant with project operations management;

  • A high level of personal integrity and a sense of accountability;

  • Ability and willingness to collaborate and contribute productively to the team’s output as an effective team player; and

  • Work experience in multicultural environments would be an added advantage.

Additional Information

This position will be on a temporary contract basis and will be per cohort as per the YALI RLC EA calendar for the next two years. The incumbent will be required to reside at the campus for four weeks/one month each time there is a cohort in place from June 2019 to February 2021. (This means there will be months/periods where the incumbent will be off campus)
