Job Description

Approximate start of work: Early to Mid October. 

District Wide Sign Crew Technicians support the Lead of the District-Wide Signing Operation in maintaining and installing roadway signage. Responsibilities include assisting with the upkeep of overhead span wire signs, ground-mounted gore signs, and large extruded panel signs, as well as supporting GDOT crews with overhead extruded panel signage. Work is performed on interstates and state routes throughout the Atlanta Metro area. Technicians also help maintain adequate inventory of materials (posts, mounting hardware, signs), assist with preventative maintenance on assigned equipment, and remain available for emergency response. Additional duties may be assigned as needed.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

The following list highlights the essential functions of this position. Other related tasks may be assigned as appropriate.

  • Operates a variety of handheld tools and equipment for sign installation (e.g., power saw, drill, sander, pole saw, chainsaw, ratchet).
  • Works at heights of 20+ feet using an aerial lift/basket.
  • Operates fleet equipment including flatbed sign trucks, aerial lift trucks, and attenuator trucks.
  • Installs new roadway signs, repairs or replaces damaged signage, and fabricates/repairs barricades.
  • Performs routine cleaning and maintenance of tools, vehicles, and equipment.
  • Provides assistance during emergencies, including after-hours and weekends.
  • Performs additional related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Training and Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work in challenging environmental conditions, including frequent lifting, pulling, and pushing of up to 100 lbs.
  • Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience may be considered.
  • Ability to obtain Traffic Control Certification.
  • Willingness to learn the operation, repair, and maintenance of contractor-supplied equipment and other tools used to perform assigned work.
  • Willingness to learn industry practices, materials, methods, and equipment used in highway sign maintenance.
  • Valid Class C Driver’s License with the ability to obtain a Class B CDL.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to interpret instructions delivered in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Basic knowledge of safe and proper use of manual, electrical, gas, and hydraulic-powered tools and equipment.
  • Skill in operating manual, gas-powered, and hydraulic tools, as well as light equipment.
  • Ability to learn and apply information from safety rules, operating/maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, the Federal MUTCD, and related documents.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions accurately.
  • Ability to work in extreme temperatures (above 100°F and below 30°F) for extended periods.
  • Ability to work at heights exceeding 20 feet.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with GDOT staff, coworkers, and the public.
  • Demonstrates a professional, cooperative, and safety-conscious work ethic.

Physical Requirements

  • Regularly required to lift, move, or carry objects weighing up to 100 lbs.
  • Must be able to climb ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, and poles; maintain balance while walking, standing, crouching, or working on narrow, slippery, or unstable surfaces.
  • Ability to bend, kneel, crawl, and use hands and arms for reaching, handling, or operating tools and materials.
  • Frequently exposed to fumes, odors, airborne particles, toxic or caustic substances, high noise levels, vehicular traffic, and damp or humid conditions.

Hourly pay rate: $17-19/hourly depending on experience
