Job Description
DeAngelo Contracting Services (DCS) is looking for a highly motivated, skilled, and safety-conscious Spray Equipment Operator with strong mechanical aptitude and a positive attitude. The successful candidate will be responsible for operating spray equipment for herbicide application on Union Pacific railroad tracks, as well as maintaining the truck and equipment.

Key Responsibilities:
- Pre-Shift Briefing: Each day, DCS and Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) spray team members gather in the lounge car for a job briefing to discuss the goals for the day and review safety protocols.
- Spray Car Setup: After the briefing, you will proceed to the spray car to set up for the day's work, including opening the water and chemical tanks, preparing the Raven system, and configuring the computer for spraying operations.
- Spraying Operations: You will be responsible for spraying herbicides along the railroad track, typically traveling at 25 mph and covering up to 150 miles per day. All spraying is managed through the Raven system on the spray car of the train.
- Equipment Maintenance: You will be responsible for maintaining the spray equipment and ensuring it is operating efficiently.
Comfortable Work Environment:
The spray car is equipped with comfortable amenities, including chairs, air conditioning, heating, a refrigerator, microwave, and restroom facilities. After your shift, you’ll return to the lounge car or your private room, each featuring a bed, fridge, sink, shower, toilet, A/C, and heating. The lounge car also includes a full-size refrigerator, cooktop, sink, and grill for cooking meals.
Shift Structure:
At some point, there will be two shifts in operation. While you’re off duty, you will have access to the lounge car or your private room to rest. You will work on the spray train for two weeks at a time, followed by one week of delivery truck operation, bringing chemicals to the train. While working on the truck, you will stay in company-paid motels and receive a per diem for both truck and train assignments.
The spray train and the truck are completely tobacco free.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Operations:
- Supervise the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) on-track spraying contract.
- Apply weed, grass, and brush control chemicals along Union Pacific tracks.
- Ensure proper programming of the Raven system for daily operations.
- Open and prepare all water and chemical tanks for the day’s work.
- Calibrate all spray equipment to ensure optimal performance.
- Maintain strict adherence to safety guidelines during all operations.
- Manage daily and weekly record-keeping using the company’s computer systems.
Customer Service:
- Oversee communication with customers and the public.
- Address and resolve customer or public complaints promptly.
- Report any potential safety hazards or liabilities to management immediately.
Technical Expertise:
- Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of various weed, grass, and brush types.
- Possess in-depth knowledge of the chemicals used, including their applications, control methods, and associated safety protocols.
- Be proficient in application techniques and equipment usage.
- Fully understand the calibration process and the impact of spray patterns.
Qualifications
EDUCATION:
- High school diploma or equivalent is required.
EXPERIENCE:
- Must have a valid driver’s license with at least 3 years of clean driving experience.
- Ability to travel away from home for up to 6 weeks (hotel expenses paid by the company when not assigned to SE).
- Regular overtime is expected with the possibility of 60-65 hours per week.
- Night work may be required.
- Hours may vary depending on weather conditions and workload.
- Spraying will be year-round as the train covers the entire UPRR system.
- Must have experience with Microsoft programs such as excel, word and outlook.
- Date entry experience required.
- Must comply with the company drug and alcohol policy.
DeAngelo Contracting Services provide our employees with paid training to help them become successful in their positions. Areas of training include:
- Learn how to identify different weeds, grass, and brush species.
- Determine what chemicals effectively control what plant species.
- Learn how to safely operate application equipment.
- Different application methods utilized in the field.
- An understanding of how to maintain equipment.
ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs. and climb ladders/stairs on spray train.
- Must be able to pass a DOT physical.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- The spray train is geared up to run 24/7. This will require us to work and live aboard spray train. We will provide rooms on the train and a per-diem for food.
