Job Description

Job Title: Social Media Specialist

Terms: Full-time, Permanent (34 hours / 4-day week)

Location: Vancouver or Toronto preferred, with remote work during the Covid-19 pandemic

Reports to: Content Manager

Salary: $50-60K, based on experience

You and the Role:

You are a collaborative, creative, and solutions-oriented Social Media Specialist who will play a critical role in the success of our national Communications and Digital teams. You’ll bring new solutions and perspectives to our online voice and engagement. You can comfortably lead, support and execute digital strategy, content and initiatives across our current key social media channels, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube (and potentially help us explore new channels – e.g. TikTok).

You help build awareness of the David Suzuki Foundation’s work and our campaigns to drive acquisition, retention, engagement and donations. You are an excellent writer, communicator and digital marketer – and you thrive when producing multi-media content that engages and motivates audiences.

You’re curious about emerging technologies and you enjoy staying on top of digital trends. You are a master at communicating with online audiences across a variety of digital channels in a consistent, strong and engaging voice, while considering and adapting to the diverse needs of different audiences and our organization’s goals.

Your knowledge of our campaigns, current environmental issues, social justice causes and current events – as well as the latest digital trends, what’s happening culturally in social media spaces – allows you to collaborate with our organization’s various Communications Specialists to develop creative and insightful content, tailored to different audiences in a timely manner.

Your responsibilities

Content Development & Creation

  • Lead and support development of social media content strategy that strikes balance between various types of content (calls-to-action / campaign “asks,” light / inspirational content, educational/awareness-building, user-generated content, etc.)
  • Help coordinate and maintain the DSF’s social media editorial calendar.
  • Conduct regular social marketing campaigns and track their success and areas for improvement.
  • Maintain an up-to-date understanding of social media and digital trends, and proactively seek out opportunities to leverage this knowledge to showcase our work through digital storytelling.
  • Ensure organizational messaging is optimized for various social media platforms and aligned with our brand guidelines.
  • Help develop powerful and engaging social media experiences and engagement opportunities for our supporters, while growing our digital presence and extending the reach and impact of our work.
  • Suggest improvements to the DSF’s social media content tone, format and cadence to make the most of our extensive social media reach.

Collaboration

  • Work closely with the Director of Communications, Content Manager, Digital Strategy Manager and various Communications / Digital Specialists as required to execute social media activities.
  • Work with our Graphic Designer to coordinate graphic and video design services.
  • Collaborate with our Digital team to develop, manage and analyze social media advertising campaigns to expand DSF's reach, generate leads, increase website traffic and supporter acquisition / retention.
  •  In collaboration with our Public Engagement team, work cross-functionally to design and implement online and social media strategies for virtual and on-the-ground events.
  • Advise communications and engagement staff on social media community moderation and help build relationships with our online community (including social media listening – within and outside the DSF community).

Strategic Communications Planning

  • Contribute to the Foundation's overall social media strategy, including the acquisition and retention of supporters. Help new audiences (throughout Canada, primarily in English) discover our work on climate, nature and sustainable communities, and inform them of effective actions they can take to support a true socio-ecological transition in Canada.
  • Review and analyze social media KPIs on a weekly, monthly and/or quarterly basis and turn the data collected into actionable recommendations.

 

Qualifications

Skills, experience and training required

  • At least 3-5 years of experience in social media, marketing and digital communications.
  • Experience with content marketing and social media narrative hook
  • Experience with ad creation, targeting and analysis.
  • Proven ability to work across and adapt content for all mainstream social media channels., including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube (and potentially new channels for DSF – e.g., TikTok).
  • Technical ability with digital tools, technologies and practices, including analytics (Google Analytics).
  • Experience in the following areas:
    • Social advertising, including ad creation, targeting and analysis for all mainstream social channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, etc.).
    • Adapting content for digital channels and meeting audience needs.
    • Writing for social media (concise, punchy, colloquial, etc.)
  • Commitment and passion for thoroughness and accountability; ability to use digital measurement systems and analyze project results.
  • Excellent organizational, project management and time management skills.
  • Exceptional communication skills in English.
  • Strong analytical skills and experience working with Google Analytics, Hootsuite or other social listening tools.
  • Graphic design (Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.) and video editing skills are major assets.
  • Experience working with media relations teams to integrate traditional and social media strategies is also an asset.
