Job Description

Position title: Science Projects Manager

Terms:  Permanent Full-time (34 hours/ 4-day work week)

Location: Based at our Montreal office, remote during COVID-19

Reporting: Director General, Quebec

Salary: 55k – 65k, based on experience

In this role, you play an integral role in the success of the Foundation’s science-related projects. You are primarily responsible for managing the implementation of all DSF science-related projects in Quebec. You have excellent communication skills and enjoy accurate and detail-oriented work.

This role supports the Director General for Quebec with the following: strategy, writing, research and communication of specific policies, (both via the media, and to government and industry contacts), and in developing project proposals, briefings, reports, backgrounders and other materials. You would cultivate and maintain strong relationships within DSF and participate in developing networks and alliances with Quebec ENGOs.

Your Responsibilities Include

Planning & Coordination:

  • Set strategic direction. Manage and execute science-related projects. Coordinate and supervise staff.
  • Contribute to the development of funding proposals and reporting for science-related projects in Quebec.
  • Responsible for project management of assigned programs.

Policy Development:

  • Contribute to the development of Quebec and relevant federal policies through research and analysis.
  • Review policy-related literature to maintain current knowledge of relevant policies.
  • Work with DSF’s science and policy experts and regional department staff to develop strategic and coordinated efforts to advance their goals in Quebec and federally.
  • Participate in briefings for decision-makers, media and others and represent DSF in official meetings and committees.

Writing, Research & Communications:

  • Develop, write and prepare opinion pieces, discussion papers, technical reports, briefing notes, presentations, correspondence, communications, and backgrounders.
  • Copy-edit reports and other external documents in French.
  • Manage the David Suzuki Foundation fellowship program in Quebec.
  • Represent DSF in the media.
  • Make public presentations on various relevant topics.
  • Synthesize and popularize scientific information in blogs, vlogs or interviews.

Network Building:

  • Reach out actively and build strong relations with Indigenous communities in Quebec.
  • Meet with representatives from industry and government including policy staff and elected officials to convey DSF policies, and to provide these parties with relevant information.
  • Build and maintain networks among ENGOs and other opinion leader groups who support or share DSF’s objectives.
  • Build and maintain strong networks in the academic sector on areas of expertise relevant to DSF’s work.

Qualifications

Skills, Experience and Knowledge Required

  • Graduate degree in environmental science or equivalent. Preferably in the fields of climate, energy or transportation.
  • 5+ years of previous experience in research and project management.
  • Expertise in current public and business policies on climate and biodiversity issues; climate and energy issues; as well as climate and transportation.
  • Expert in fundraising for science or sustainability related projects.
  • Proven experience with the media is an asset.
  • Experience in the net-zero transition policy space a strong asset.

 What you bring to the role:

  • Research and policy experience on pesticides, pollinators and waste management a strong asset.
  • Confident and motivating communicator with spokesperson experience.
  • Superior strategic planning abilities; results-oriented.
  • Experience in working effectively with diverse internal and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent interpersonal and networking skills.
  • Strong project management skills—can balance reactive daily tasks with planning and stewarding longer-term projects
  • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy with strong time management skills.
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively within a dynamic team setting and in a fast-paced and rapidly changing environment with periods of high-pressure activity.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in French & English. Familiarity with technical writing and ability to interpret technical material for general audiences.
  • An active network of professional contacts in science and/or sustainability in Quebec is an asset.
  • Computer skills: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Internet, Email
