Position Title: Spatial Analysis & Cartography Specialist

Terms: 2-year contract, full-time (34 hours/ 4-day week)

Location: Based at our Vancouver Office, with remote work during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Reporting to: Director-General, Western Region (Nature Portfolio Lead)

Salary: 55-65k, based on experience

About the Role

You are a talented Spatial Analysis & Cartography Specialist with a passion for telling stories with maps. Working with good data and evidence, you are skilled and adept at pulling out and highlighting essential narratives around challenges and solutions for experts and non-experts alike.

You would be reporting to our Western Region Director-General (Nature Portfolio Lead) in this role. You would provide project coordination and campaign support, GIS analysis and cartography services across multiple projects that support the development of marine and terrestrial conservation areas and ecosystem-based management plans in Canada.

Your primary focus would be Howe Sound and Coastal BC, with significant allocations to Boreal Caribou Recovery, Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas and mapping/planning for Nature-Based Solutions. The role includes GIS analysis and cartography support for other David Suzuki Foundation project areas from time to time, as needed.  

Responsibilities Include:

• Expert at a variety of complex GIS oriented projects including:
  • assessment ecosystem values,
  • species range and abundance,
  • geographic range of industrial effects on marine and terrestrial environments,
  • analysis of marine protected area options and boundaries,
  • analysis of environmental effects of shipping,
  • and mapping of cultural interests in BC’s Howe Sound region.
• Creation and design of consistently high-quality data-driven maps for DSF project work, government resource management processes, advocacy and public communications.
• Responsible for liaising with numerous stakeholders including Indigenous Nations and communications specialists.
• Secure GIS datasets of relevant values, features and other spatial data.
• Organize and support meetings and workshops of advisory committees, working groups and special events such as workshops, webinars and field tours (e.g., logistics, technical support, notetaking).
• Responsible for liaising between contractors, project personnel at the Foundation and partner organizations and stakeholders.
• Oversee the maintenance and updating of technical equipment required for this position.
• Identify where additional professional/expert services are required to supplement skills and meet project objectives.
• Easily engage in other projects requiring GIS analysis and other associated duties, as directed.

Skills, Experience and Knowledge Required

• 3-5+ years of experience with all aspects of GIS projects including data collection, spatial analysis, map production, stakeholder engagement and presentations.
• University or college degree, preferably in geography, landscape ecology, environmental management or a similar discipline.
• GIS training, knowledge and experience is key. You must have extensive ArcGIS online and Web App builder experience.
• Project manager extraordinaire: you are expert at managing multiple complex projects, tasks, timelines and budgets.
• Proven ability in the planning and delivery of meetings, workshop and other events.
• Exceptional attention to detail and quality including administrative and technical outputs. You are organized and consistently produce high quality work.
• Knowledge and solid experience in the following areas of marine environment, protected areas, biodiversity and ecology.
• Expert in summarizing complex information into briefing documents, maps, meeting/workshop notes, progress reports and presentations for diverse and non-technical audiences.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with people from diverse backgrounds, organizations and sectors.
• Experience working with Indigenous communities and traditional knowledge is an asset.
• Superb written and spoken English language skills. French language skills are an asset.
