Job Description
Position Title: Indigenous Outdoor Education Outreach Contractor
Terms: Part-time contract starting in April to June 1
Location: Our Vancouver office and remote at home
Reporting to: Senior Public Engagement Specialist Western Region
Salary: $22.75/ per hour
About the role:
As Indigenous Outdoor Education Outreach Contractor you would work with the DSF Western Region Senior Public Engagement Specialist to deliver outreach and engagement services related to Camp Suzuki at Chá7elkwnech and the report on its potential application by other communities. Key partners in this work will be the Canadian Camping Association and Ayas Menmen (Squamish family and youth services). Several other organizations will be important to foster partnerships between Indigenous groups and outdoor education organizations (camps).
Using the model outlined in “Setting Up Camp: Lessons from Camp Suzuki at Chá7elkwnech: Walking with the Squamish (please check our website for more details) you will work with the partner groups to compile material for a camp start-up tool kit, including sample budget, curriculum and schedule.
This contract requires excellent organizational skills, clear communication, a strong understanding of Indigenous ways of knowing and outdoor education. Keeping excellent records of the contacts and communications with partners will be a fundamental part of this contract position. At the end of the contract, you will be responsible for distributing a questionnaire to the partner groups and camps, then compiling a 5-page summary report outlining best practices, failures and successes of the project.
Responsibilities:
- Developing a coordinated plan to contact interested camps and Indigenous groups
- Organising and providing materials, guidance and support for interested organizations; responsible for the completion of a "Camp Start-up Toolkit".
- Recognizing and recruiting quality partners
- Keeping DSF supervisor and colleagues informed of progress or challenges
- Maintaining good communications with partner organizations
- Keeping clear, detailed records of contacts and correspondence, including a database of contacts.
- Developing and distributing a questionnaire to the partner groups and camps
- Preparing a 5-page summary report outlining best practices, failures and successes of the project.
Qualifications
Skills, Experience and Knowledge
- Excellent organizational practices
- Familiar with Microsoft Excel, Word, Teams; other relevant programs a bonus
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong interpersonal skills, confident to speak and correspond with multiple organizations.
- Experience working in public engagement
- Ability to work autonomously
- Familiarity with online tools such as Dropbox
Education and Experience:
- Experience working with multiple organizations is a strong asset
- Extensive experience working with First Nations and other Indigenous groups
- Education or work experience in outdoor education
