Job Description

We are looking for a Master Thesis Student (m/f/d) on Software development frontend and backend of software tool for remote automatic error handling of Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMR) in intralogistics to support our Production Engineering department located in Eching, near Munich.

The complexity of intralogistics in a production facility has been increasing due to wide variety of an increasing complexity of production processes. Transporting material and part supply from inbound warehouse to each manufacturing lines and picking up and drop-off of manufactured products back to warehouse for packaging and shipping are becoming more complex.

Additionally, the need of autonomous mobile robots (AMR) in a production area to work collaboratively with operators to make processes and workflows more effective has increased the challenges to maintain a flawless operation of AMRs. In intralogistics. Therefore, a control system for controlling of AMRs with high accuracy and flexibility at the same time are important requirements in achieving a flawless AMR operation in production facilities. Despite the facts that many AMR suppliers already provide a web app or programming platform as tools to create certain actions and routes for the AMRs, however those tools functionalities are limited and rigid.

Due to the facts above, DENSO developed an in-house control system as a software tool which enables AMRs to create their own routes between location on warehouse or facility.

Purpose:

The purpose of this study is to expand and develop further most viable product of our current software tool for controlling autonomous mobile robot in intralogistics and evaluate current situation of AMR applications in our production facilities to establish a new concept and solution into the software tool by following the communication interface standards for AMR (VDA 5050) and Safety ISO 3691-4. The goal is to develop additional functionalities of the software to be able to establish monitoring process and provide automatic fail handling to maintain the flow of AMR(s) in our production facilities and reducing the downtime of the AMR(s).

This Master thesis project consists out of the following tasks:

  • Software study: To create an overview and understanding of our software tool which has been currently developed within our lab.
  • Problem definition: Define specific use cases for the thesis and a solution approach by analyzing current situations of AMR applications in our production facilities.
  • Concept definition: Design and implement automatic error handling solution to avoid downtime of AMR and reduce manual intervention.
  • Concept evaluation: : Evaluate the current system and the concept, in particular to the use cases and transforming it into current software.
