Job Description

We are seeking an outstanding mechanical engineer to join our mechanical engineering team and support the development of novel medical devices and applications. Projects involve a broad range of technologies including sophisticated laser optical delivery systems, high-power ultrasound, and radio-frequency devices. In this role you will be the primary designer and developer of precision opto-mechanical assemblies for robust structural and thermally managed laser based medical systems. The engineer will work closely with our electrical, laser design and industrial design teams and be responsible for product development from ideation through product launch. Previous experience with product development is required, preferably in the medical device or laser industry.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Define and guide development of elegant mechanical designs that meet requirements for product performance, cost, reliability, and manufacturability.
  • Model and layout designs using 3D CAD for all phases of product development from proof-of-concept through manufacturing.
  • Utilize and guide junior level engineers and designers to accomplish a successful product development
  • Collaborate regularly to technical design reviews, project scheduling, and development of new product concepts and applications.
  • Participate in new product concept development activities, including definition of product requirements, system specifications, and architecture.
  • Drive design verification by testing design performance in the lab and design validation by developing fast-turn clinical prototypes for use in the Cutera Research Clinic.
  • Use FEA simulation tools to model mechanical assemblies and guide design development.

Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • B.S. or M.S. degree in mechanical engineering with 8+ years of product development experience.

Position Requirements:

  • Extensive mechanical engineering design experience with laser-based commercial products
  • Experience designing custom optics mounting structures and optical mounting techniques
  • Knowledge of materials for structurally sound optics operating in an enclosed structure. 
  • Knowledge of materials and methods to limit outgassing inside optical enclosure
  • Proficient with SolidWorks CAD design

Preferred skills:

  • Medical based equipment is a plus
  • Thermal analysis experience and/or working with thermal analysts on design is a plus
  • Experience working with optical specialty vendors is a plus
  • Experience with galvanometers, solenoids, small motors, and piezo positioners is a plus
  • Experience with magnetic or optical position sensing is a plus.
