Job Description

Develop and apply energy market and power system models to support long-term power market outlooks, capacity expansion, reliability analysis, and electricity price forecasting across North American power markets. The role requires hands-on experience with PLEXOS and the ability to independently manage modeling workflows from data preparation and model configuration through simulation, quality assurance, analysis, and delivery of results.

The position will work closely with the energy modeling team to develop, maintain, and improve production cost, capacity expansion, reliability, and market price forecasting models, while contributing to automation and continuous improvement of the broader modeling pipeline.

Responsibilities:

Power Market Modeling

  • Develop and run PLEXOS models for North American power markets, including production cost, capacity expansion, and market simulation studies.
  • Support reliability and resource adequacy analysis across different system and market scenarios.
  • Review model results, troubleshoot issues, and translate outputs into clear market and system insights.

Price Forecasting & Modeling Workflows

  • Manage established power price forecasting workflows, from data preparation and model runs through QA and final outputs.
  • Maintain and improve existing modeling routines and processes as market assumptions and methodologies evolve.
  • Take ownership of assigned modeling studies and deliver results with limited supervision.

Data & Automation

  • Prepare, maintain, and validate datasets used for generation, transmission, load, renewables, storage, fuel prices, and market modeling.
  • Develop Python-based tools and automation to streamline model preparation, simulation, QA, and post-processing.
  • Maintain reliable and repeatable end-to-end modeling workflows.

Market Research & Analysis

  • Track developments across US ISO/RTO markets and incorporate relevant changes into modeling assumptions.
  • Analyze market and simulation results to identify key trends in generation, transmission, prices, reliability, and resource requirements.
  • Prepare charts, tables, and concise findings for internal and client-facing deliverables.

Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience with PLEXOS, including model configuration, execution, troubleshooting, and analysis of simulation results, is a must.
  • 3+ years of relevant experience in power system modeling, electricity market analysis, or a related quantitative field using PLEXOS for North American ISO/RTO markets.
  • A Bachelors and Masters in a relevant Electrical Engineering specialization are required.
  • Strong understanding of power system fundamentals, generation technologies, transmission systems, electricity markets, and grid operations.
  • Experience working with large and complex power system or electricity market datasets.
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills with proficiency in Python (Pandas, NumPy) and Excel.
  • Ability to independently manage modeling workflows and deliver high-quality analytical outputs with limited supervision.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to identify and troubleshoot issues in models, datasets, and analytical workflows.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Flexibility to work 1:00 pm - 9:00 pm IST to collaborate with US-based teams and clients.
  • Strong Python programming skills and experience developing automated modeling or data-processing pipelines.

Role Expectations

This is an energy modeling and power market analytics role, rather than a pure data science or programming position. The successful candidate should have a strong interest in electricity markets, power system operations, grid planning, and quantitative energy analysis.

The candidate is expected to take end-to-end ownership of assigned modeling workflows, including understanding the underlying methodology, maintaining model inputs, executing simulations, performing quality assurance, troubleshooting issues, analyzing results, and delivering outputs. Strong programming and automation skills are important, but they should be applied primarily to improve the energy modeling and analytical workflow.

Candidates with strong experience in PLEXOS and North American power market modeling, combined with the ability to independently own modeling pipelines, will be particularly well suited to this position.
