Job Summary

The Government Affairs Assistant provides substantive policy, logistical, and administrative support to the Firm’s Government Affairs Group. The assistant tracks and monitors key developments at the White House, in Congress and at federal agencies; attends and summarizes Congressional hearings and press events; schedules and sometimes attends Congressional meetings and coordinates and prepares materials for those meetings. The Assistant also provides administrative support to the Government Affairs Group to include managing correspondence (electronic and paper); coordinating schedules and calendars for Government Affairs Group events; and helping to manage client meetings, events, visits and D.C. client Fly-Ins. The Assistant will also participate in and help coordinate client development and client service meetings and activities.  Finally, the Assistant has the opportunity to attend or participate in political events when and if interested in doing so.

Job Responsibilities

  • Tracks, monitors, and summarizes key developments on Capitol Hill in general and in specific Congressional committees most relevant to clients on a daily basis.
  • Tracks and monitors Congressional bills, press events and hearings and provides written summaries of these Congressional events for clients.
  • Conducts specific research into legislative and regulatory proposals, principally in the areas of defense, energy, environmental and healthcare public policy.
  • Prepares memos, presentations and briefing materials for meetings on Capitol Hill.
  • Completes research concerning potential clients, industries, sectors and businesses related to the Group.
  • Plans and organizes meetings with Congressional members and staffers, federal agency officials, occasional state legislators, key stakeholders, and others.
  • Plans client calls, Congressional Fly-Ins and other client D.C. meetings.
  • Manages internal resources to organize and plan special meetings and events in Washington, D.C. with senior corporate executives for clients and government affairs staff.
  • Performs and assists in administrative duties to assist the Government Affairs Group working with others from time to time.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated knowledge of or a desire to learn about the role, duties and function of the White House, the U.S. Congress, Congressional committees, Congressional procedure, the legislative and regulatory process and oversight of the federal government by Congress.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of or a desire to learn about the role, duties and function of federal agencies and the process for creating new federal regulations, and how to navigate federal agency websites and publications for updates and information.
  • Strong research, writing and analytical skills, as well as knowledge of or a desire to learn how to use and research Congress.gov, the Federal Register, Politico, the Hill, Congressional Quarterly and other written print and digital materials related to the creation, modification and finalizing or passage of federal legislation and regulation.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing with attorneys, public policy professionals, staff, and external contacts.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and with others in a cooperative, enthusiastic and friendly manner to accomplish position functions and participate in team efforts.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize work in a dynamic, fast-paced, and complex environment to meet deadlines and daily requirements.
  • Intermediate knowledge of MS suite to produce quality written communications such as memos, spreadsheets, slides and standard work documents.  Knowledge of Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram.  Knowledge of database software, e.g. Access, or other data analysis tool preferred.

Education

The position requires a Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in government (political science, public administration, pre-law), business/economics, communications, or a related area.

Experience

The position requires either an interest in learning about the functioning of the White House, Congress and federal agencies or at least one year of experience working on Capitol Hill.
