Job Description

Job Summary: 

The Manager, Practice Group Business Development & Management (PG BD&M) works with and supports assigned 1-2 Practice Groups, along with some cross-practice, industry-focused working groups, in managing their business development initiatives and marketing needs and their day-to-day operations. The Manager will have the support of an assigned Practice Group Coordinator and will report to a Director, Practice Group Business Development & Management.

This position will also work closely with other members of the PG BD&M, Marketing & Communications, and Client Development teams to ensure their initiatives support firm priorities and help drive overall firm strategy.

Primary Areas of Responsibility:

Business Development and Marketing
•    Partners with practice and working group leaders and assigned Director to contribute to and assist in the development and execution of strategic plans to drive business development goals of the assigned groups; includes support in generating business leads, expanding existing client matters, and identifying and pursuing cross-selling opportunities.
•    Develops pitches and proposals, including firm responses to formal RFPs.
•    In collaboration with Research Services, conducts and delivers meaningful research on existing and prospective clients, competitor activity, and industry or market trends to inform and support business development opportunities, strategies, and decisions.
•    Develops compelling sales collateral framing capabilities and incorporating key input from a broad range of attorneys, target market intelligence, and our marketing, communications, business development and practice strategy teams.
•    Implements firm-wide efforts related to the knowledge management of pitches, proposals, and opportunities.
•    Maintains matters/experience lists and databases.
•    Plays a key role in the development of website content and marketing collateral and ensures that they are regularly refreshed for accuracy.
•    Supports opportunities to increase brand awareness and profile for the assigned practice areas, including outward facing activities such as sponsored events, in-house presentations, professional speaking opportunities and articles and other publications.  
•    Monitors and reports on the progress of on-going business development efforts and initiatives for assigned groups. 
•    Supports attorneys with, and supervises PG Coordinators handling the logistics of, client alerts, blogs, newsletters.
•    Oversees the timely preparation and submission of the Chambers, Law360 and other ranking submissions for the assigned groups. 

Financial Analysis, Reporting, Management and Budgeting – in collaboration with the firm’s Financial Planning & Analysis Department,
•    Reviews and analyzes financial reports provided by the Finance Department, reports regularly to group leaders on key performance indicators and makes recommendations for appropriate actions to improve group financial performance.
•    Oversees the development, submission and ongoing monitoring of the assigned groups’ revenue and expense budgets for the year.
•    Produces ad hoc financial reports for Practice Group leaders, as needed.
•    With respect to assigned Practice Groups, reviews and monitors aged accounts receivable and unbilled time reports and works with billing partners and Accounting team to ensure issues are promptly addressed, including those related to client billings, invoices, and collections.

Attorney Development, Staffing and Lateral Integration – in collaboration with the firm’s Attorney Recruiting group and Lawyer Development Committee,
•    Takes primary role in onboarding and integration of lateral attorneys in the assigned groups.
•    Provides support on all lateral recruitment activities for the assigned groups.
•    Participates in talent development initiatives focused on attorney training, career/skill development and core competencies.  Assists with establishment and coordination of formal and informal attorney development curricula.
•    With respect to assigned Practice Groups:
o    Monitors new matters, attorney utilization and current/anticipated workload and works closely with Practice Group staffing partner to address staffing issues/ requirements.
o    Oversees Practice Group Coordinator efforts in all new attorney orientation, summer associate program, and 1st year associate programs. 
o    Works with Practice Group leaders on attorney evaluations and promotion issues.
o    Makes recommendations for Practice Development Advisors and mentors pairings for attorneys in Practice Group.

Day-to-Day Operations
•    Sets agendas for and run group meetings (group leaders, steering committees, partners and group-wide).
•    Develops agendas for, oversees and coordinates group retreats.
•    Oversees maintenance of internal knowledge management system to catalog attorney work product and business development materials.
•    Manages group specific content on the firm’s intranet.
•    Drives best practices in the group such as knowledge management for work product, development of checklists and templates improved quality, integration of new attorneys.
•    Works with group leaders to address various personnel issues.
•    Works collaboratively with other departments within the firm to implement and drive various firm initiatives.

Qualifications

Requirements:

Education
The position requires a Bachelor’s Degree.  A JD, MBA or other related advanced degree may substitute for required experience.

Experience
The position requires a minimum of five (5) years of increasingly responsible, directly related experience during which the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities were attained. Experience in the direct supervision of others on a regular basis preferred.  Direct experience in a law firm or professional services environment in any professional capacity preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
•    Experience with developing and maintaining high-impact marketing content in alignment with key stakeholder groups. 
•    Experience with developing a compelling and expertly crafted value proposition.
•    Experience with guiding and/or developing positioning and branding solutions that integrate multiple product/service capabilities.
•    Experience with content creation and messaging development in collaboration with the multiple and cross-functional stakeholders to support the brand, describe the benefits of the solutions, and convey the image of the company, throughout all marketing elements.
•    Experience with leveraging research, competitive intelligence to support go-to-market strategies while balancing internal sensitivities and potential return on investment. 
•    Basic knowledge of and familiarity with legal and business environments.  
•    General digital and tech-savviness and social media acumen.
•    Demonstrated ability to build strong working relationships across all levels of the organization and work effectively both independently and with others in a cooperative, enthusiastic and friendly manner to accomplish position functions and participate in team efforts.
•    Ability to provide quality and efficient client service to both internal and external clients.  Involves the use of considerable tact and persuasion in gaining the cooperation of others.
•    Excellent time management, organization, and prioritization skills and the ability to drive the end-to-end execution of multiple projects simultaneously with minimal direction in a dynamic and complex environment to meet deadlines and daily requirements.
•    Strong appetite and aptitude to learn new technologies, develop innovative solutions, and deliver compelling messaging.
•    Must possess the interpersonal skills necessary to communicate information with tact and courtesy as well as follow instructions effectively from a diverse group of clients, lawyers, and staff.  
•    Demonstrated ability to communicate persuasively, both orally and in writing, on a prepared and extemporaneous basis with clients, lawyers, and staff.  
•    Demonstrated ability to make presentations to small and/or large groups in an effective manner. 
•    Knowledge of basic accounting and budgeting principles and ability to monitor and manage budgets within established limits, analyze financial data and draw accurate conclusions.
•    Ability to manage and develop skills and knowledge of others.  Ability to appropriately delegate work to others to meet deadlines, goals and objectives.
•    Intermediate knowledge of MS suite to produce quality written communications such as memos, spreadsheets, slides, and other standard work documents.
•    Ability to quickly learn and utilize additional software.
•    Ability to represent the firm with honesty, integrity, and professionalism, consistently acting in an ethical manner.
