Job Description
Opportunity at a Glance
This individual supports instructional program and the functioning of the Clinical Skills Laboratories in the areas noted below. The individual must be able to work with both dead and live animals; as well as model making materials. Thus, an understanding of health and safety is important. The candidate must also be willing to assist in the preparation of specimens and materials that at times may be malodorous.
Responsibilities
Ensure the smooth running of clinical skills facilities, and at all times to do whatever is needed to accomplish this over-arching task without being instructed, including (but not necessarily limited to) the following specific tasks:
Laboratory Duties – 70%
• Ensure at all times that the Clinical Skills Lab, Practice Lab, and Freezer Room are clean and attractive by the implementation of daily cleaning protocols which include cleaning of spills on floors, tables and walls, refilling stock items while also cleaning coolers and cold storage facilities on a regular basis.
• Prepare fluid solutions for model making purposes.
• Create and maintain cadaver models as directed.
• Setup and breakdown of various lab.
• Manage inventory logs and storage room organizational tasks.
• Liaise with and collect suitable specimens from the local abattoir to be used for teaching and research.
• Properly dispose of organic waste and biohazardous medical materials.
• Assist faculty with the use of live animals in instruction; including obtaining, holding, and returning the animals to their correct kennels, stalls, or other.
Assist Faculty with Professional Veterinary Student Teaching – 30%
• Ensure that teaching models and specimens are ready and available when needed for instruction.
• Assist the instructional team with the preparation of learning material for teaching, research and examination purposes.
• Assist students in locating models and their return of the models to storage.
• Proper maintenance and upkeep of specimens and freezer storage as needed.
• Have the capacity to teach related laboratory subject matter to students under the direction and guidance of the instructional team in a laboratory setting.
• Model development and maintenance.
Any other duties as assigned by management.
Qualifications
- Associate's Degree in Biological Sciences Required or
- related field combined with additional years of experience in a laboratory setting Required
- Background in laboratory maintenance, animal handling, medical work Preferred
- Good knowledge in Microsoft Office and database applications.
- Proven ability to communicate professionally in a corporate veterinary medical environment.
- Flexibility to work overtime, weekends and holidays if needed.
- Ability to lift heavy objects up to 50 lbs.
- Knowledge of veterinary medicine is highly desired.
- Capacity to work independently.
- Organizational and communication skills are essential.
