Opportunity at a Glance
The K9 Patrol Specialist will be responsible for patrolling both on and off campus areas which are considered part of the AUC community.  This position is designed to promote the safety and protection of the students, visitors, guests, faculty and staff who are part of our community.  The K9 Patrol Specialist will also act as a liaison to local Law Enforcement and will be tasked with reporting any suspicious activity, act as back-up in preventing a crime in progress, or with recommendations to improve the safety and security of the designated areas. This position will patrol, both on-foot and/or mobile in order to ensure the safety of the AUC Community. The Specialist will also serve as back-up or act as any other security officer/patrol, as needed. This position will play an important role in Emergency situations and will be required to be an active participant in events that involve the Campus Community in addition to having oversight to ensure the Campus Community is monitored on a 24/7 basis, including holidays.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain the general well-being of the AUC K-9 Dog(s). This includes, but is not limited to, proper grooming, diet, exercise, periodic test training activities, and regular physicals.
  • Handler and K-9 dog training.  This includes keeping up with certifications, test/training exercises, continuing education relevant to the K9 support, animal welfare classes, and any training that is required to keep the dog(s) certified to meet standards. This also includes active participation in training new staff members who may join the team and any process and procedure manuals that may be needed.
  • Maintain and upkeep all equipment, the K-9 facilities and their immediate surroundings.
  • Foot and/or mobile patrolling of designated areas.
  • Respond to incidents reported by AUC Community members
  • Complete all process and procedures and/or protocols required to report incidents.  This includes the ability to articulate and properly write reports/statements, including appropriately connecting/communicating with a Campus member or non-Campus member who you may be taking a statement from or advising on appropriate behavior, and open, regular communication with the dispatcher.
  • Assist and partner with the mobile patrol units.
  • Attend, provide evidence, and/or testimony in court or other community or government office to support an arrest.
  • Work closely with the Director/Manager of Safety and Security in developing effective strategies for combating crime on and off campus and any other strategies that may be needed to protect the Campus environment, including input on hurricane preparedness or other safety protocols.
  • Execute his/her duties based on the guidelines outlined in the K-9 Standard Operating Procedures. Will also be responsible for maintaining and recommending changes/updates to said Operation Procedures.
  • May be asked to patrol at off-site events where the AUC community will be attending.
  • This position is a designated Campus Security Authority.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • High School Education (High school) required.
  • Associate's Degree Advanced Learning – in a relevant field preferred.
  • Bachelor's Degree Advanced Learning – in a relevant field preferred.
  • 2 years experience as security personnel or in the security field required.
  • Previous law enforcement experience preferred.
  • A basic understanding of local St. Maarten law a plus.
  • Excellent Communication skills, both written and verbal required.
  • Reading, writing and speaking in English required.
  • Attention to detail, respect for confidentiality and ability to influence our core competencies for success.
  • Authority and accountability
  • The K-9 patrol officer will be expected to work with minimal supervision. This position will report directly to the Safety and Security Supervisor, the Manager of Safety & Security, or in their absence a designee, who will be responsible for providing daily guidance.
  • The Safety & Security Department requires all its personnel to work varying schedules including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. Personnel assigned to the department are considered essential personnel during and following emergencies.
  • Environmental Conditions
  • Officer should expect to work in often uncomfortable indoor and outdoor locations, exposed to extreme weather including extreme heat and wet/humid conditions. Officer will be exposed to loud noises and vibration. Officers will work alone in low light and dark conditions.
  • Physical Demands
  • Sitting: Remaining in the seated position
  • Stand: Remaining on one’s feet in an upright position at a workstation without moving about
  • Walking: Moving about on foot, climbing stairs, walking on uneven surfaces unassisted
  • Lifting: Raising or lowering an object from one level to another (includes upward pulling) 50-100 lbs.
  • Carrying: Transporting an object, usually holding it in the hands or arms, or on the shoulder
  • A valid driver’s license required 
  • Specialized K9 Training/Certification required
