Job Description
The Seasonal Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for operating heavy equipment safely and effectively to support road maintenance and construction projects. The Operator must also clean, maintain and secure all equipment as directed by legislation, policies, and procedures. The position may work independently, or with a crew. This position will also complete general labour duties.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Operate heavy equipment in a safe and effective manner to minimize the risk of injury, property damage or loss of life
- Operate all heavy equipment in a safe and efficient way according to all relevant legislation, policies, and procedures.
- Perform daily safety and maintenance checks.
- Clean heavy equipment as scheduled and/or required.
- Ensure heavy equipment is safely and securely stored.
- Advise the Transportation and Utilities Supervisor of any requirements for maintenance or repairs.
- Participate in routine maintenance.
- Practice workplace safety.
- Participate in safety meetings and other safety-related activities.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
• Grade twelve diploma or equivalent, supplemented with three or more years in equipment operation
• An appropriate Equipment Operators license
• Class 5 license and an acceptable driver’s abstract
• Class 1 driver’s license is an asset; Class 1 driver’s license required to operate some equipment
• Experience paving and patching is an asset.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
• Knowledge of truck and equipment safety.
• Knowledge of water, sewer, and garbage truck operation.
• Knowledge of operation of front-end loaders, dozers, graders, compactors, and other pieces of heavy equipment.
• Knowledge of paving and patching.
• Knowledge of equipment maintenance and storage.
• Knowledge of road construction and maintenance techniques.
• Knowledge of workplace safety requirements and procedures.
• Knowledge of record keeping system.
• Knowledge of equipment cleaning standards and procedures.
• Ability to operate single axel trucks in a safe and responsible manner.
• Ability to operate required equipment in a safe and responsible manner.

Additional Information
Hourly Pay Rate: $36.48 - $42.92
Contract Length: May 1, 2026 to April 30, 2027
Hours of Work: 44 hours/week + Overtime (Standard schedule is 10 hour days, Monday through Friday. Additional hours including weekends may be required)
