Job Description

The Senior Accountant is responsible for managing the daily financial affairs for the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). In conjunction with the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), this position is responsible for the long and short-term strategic financial operations of CSWE. The Senior Accountant will manage the day-to-day financial and business-related activities in an effort to ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations including Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). The Senior Accountant will also establish and ensure the adherence to financial internal policies and procedures, manage monthly closings, oversee the annual financial audit, and 990 tax return; and work collaboratively with the CFO to prepare CSWE’s annual budget.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manages the financial activities of CSWE ensuring compliance with related laws and regulations.
  • Performs month-end closing activities including but not limited to, booking journal entries, reconciling, and analyzing general ledger accounts, and reviewing expenses.
  • Manages internal controls including verifying, allocating, posting, and reconciling accounts payable and receivable, and other related financial activities.
  • Communicates effectively with CSWE staff on financial activities and reports to ensure accurate, concise, consistent, and timely financial reporting.  
  • Prepares and works collaboratively with CFO on financial reports.
  • Manages and provides expert guidance on CSWE’s financial activities related to bank transactions, statements, and reporting.
  • Ensures that grant reconciliations and drawdowns are performed monthly.
  • Serves as liaison with auditors to coordinate the annual audit, including preparing all audit schedules and confirmations.
  • Participates in the financial standards setting and in the forecast process.
  • Performs fiscal year end and final account reconciliations.
  • Works with independent accounting firm in preparation of annual financial statements and tax returns.
  • Contributes to the development of new or amended accounting systems, programs, and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting and/or finance and CPA preferred; MBA or MS in accounting is a plus, with a minimum of 5 years relevant accounting experience that includes not-for-profit financial management, and knowledge of government grants and contracts.
  • Experience with financial statement audits and ability to oversee the internal audit functions.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and practices and procedures.
  • Ability to effectively communicate complex financial and technical information in lay terms.
  • Must be able to work independently, communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders, including staff, members of the Board of Directors, auditors, financial consultants, and others.
  • Proficiency with all MS Office applications, including advanced level Excel skills.
  • Proficient with automated accounting systems, preferably Great Plains.
  • Aptitude for numbers and quantitative skills.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, well organized, and detail oriented.
  • Demonstrated experience in exercising sound professional judgment and discretion.
  • Absolute commitment to high ethics and integrity

This position is onsite based at CSWE office in Alexandria, Virginia.

ADA SPECIFICATIONS

  • May be required to use a computer screen for extended periods of time.

  • This position is primarily sedentary and is performed in an office setting.

  • The physical demands of this position are limited to the ability to lift up to 50 lbs., bend, stoop, and carry articles used in program activities. 

  • Periodic out-of-town travel is required.

  • Attendance at and/or support of meetings and events outside of normal working hours and may include evenings and/or weekends.
