POSITION SUMMARY

The Publications Manager at CSWE will have the opportunity to reinvigorate and reenergize CSWE Press and publications, including the management, creation, and sales of publications, including books, e-books, print brochures, programs, and other resources that help to advance excellence in social work education. This position has direct impact ensuring that our organization is seen as a trusted partner and resource when it comes to publishing materials for social work educators.

The Publications Manager relies on outstanding project management skills, drives participation and engagement among members, and ensures that content for internal and external audiences is of the highest quality. Publications include CSWE Press books, and other print and digital products such as videos, member newsletters, online productions, and other items.

This position also serves as CSWE’s leading copy editor and works to ensure that Web site content, member communications, and other content meets CSWE style standards and effectively engages CSWE members.

This position is remote and reports to the Vice President, Communications and Marketing.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Leads efforts to publish book and nonprint resources that address the needs of social work educators in the areas of the philosophy, theory, and practice of teaching; the process and evaluation of learning; the organization and structure of social work education; and practice issues as they relate to social work curricula and field work
  • Builds the brand and reputation of CSWE Press among educators, administrators, and students in social work and related disciplines
  • Works with the CSWE Council on Publications to manage outreach to CSWE members and prospective authors to acquire new titles
  • Writes and negotiates publishing contracts with authors and manages peer review of accepted manuscripts; produces annual royalty amount calculations and statements for authors
  • Formulates yearly strategies, budgets, and goals for publications
  • Researches and implements new initiatives for CSWE Press including cost-saving measures, distribution partnerships, electronic publications, etc.
  • Effectively promotes and markets publications in partnership with Communications and Marketing team members
  • Manages copyediting, design, proofreading, indexing, printing, eBook conversion, and other production services for all projects
  • Organizes and implements CSWE Press Bookstore at annual conferences (plans bookstore activities and inventory; manages bookstore on-site; analyzes and tracks sales)
  • Assigns ISBNs and manages interaction with the Library of Congress
  • Manages the publishing, storage, and distribution/shipping of publications with respect to subscriptions, claims, book sales and inventory, mailing, shipping, and complimentary copies
  • Manages contract with fulfillment vendor as well as the distribution partnerships with Amazon.com and other vendors
  • Negotiates and writes subsidiary rights contracts, copyright permission requests, and other distribution agreements
  • Edits and supervises production of Annual Program Meeting program as well as the CSWE member e-newsletter and Annual Report
  • Serves as staff liaison to COP and supports chair and member activities
  • Copyedits content as assigned, including marketing collateral, press releases, web pages, marketing material, etc.
  • Other projects as assigned by the Vice President of Communications and Marketing

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of arts degree; master’s degree preferred
  • Minimum of 6 years progressive responsibility managing publications, including peer-reviewed journals and books
  • Exceptional communication and attention to detail skills
  • Copyediting and proofreading competencies, including expert knowledge of the Publications Manual of the American Psychological Association (7th edition)
  • Demonstrated project management skills and ability to meet deadlines
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and publications stakeholders
  • Expertise with Microsoft Office, design software, database and spreadsheet programs, online submission and review systems, publishing, production, and printing principles and best practices
  • Extensive experience contracting with and managing internal staff, freelancers, and vendors
  • Experience managing personnel, budgets, sales reports, contract negotiation and management
  • Demonstrates skill in understanding of cultural differences, as well as a commitment to antiracism, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
