Senior Data Insights Lead
- Full-time
- Department: Retail
Company Description
Te Tākinatanga | Our Story
At Contact, we believe home is the most important place in the world. That belief shapes everything we do, from leading the energy transition to how we power Aotearoa and care for our people and communities.
We’re a power, broadband, and mobile company, but we’re also investing boldly in renewable energy and smarter, more connected ways of working (mahi). Our ambition is simple: to leave Aotearoa better than we found it.
Guided by our values & behaviours, we’re a team who care deeply about the work we do, how we support one another, and the impact we have. Simply put, we touch lives to make life better.
Our Retail business supports customers across energy, broadband and mobile, with data and insight informing how we understand their experiences and make commercial decisions. We have a wealth of valuable data, but there’s an opportunity to make it more accessible and easier for analysts across the business to understand and use.
As Senior Data Insights Lead, you’ll play a key role in making that happen. This isn’t about being the most technical person in the room. It’s about bringing broad experience, sound judgement and strong problem-solving skills to work that sits at the intersection of data, people and business needs. You’ll build relationships, work through different perspectives and shape practical ways forward, while strengthening analytical capability across Retail.
Job Description
Kōrero mō te tūranga | About the role
This is a senior individual contributor role with plenty of scope to use both your analytical background and broader business experience. You’ll work outside the day-to-day rhythm of a single squad, giving you space to take a wider view of how analysts work with data and where better structures, practices and shared knowledge could make a difference.
There’s scope to bring your own thinking to the work, so you’ll have room to shape the approach rather than inherit a predetermined solution.
You ‘ll:
- Work with stakeholders across Retail to understand different needs and concerns, define the real problem and find practical ways forward.
- Shape how complex customer data is structured, documented and made accessible so analysts can use it appropriately and confidently.
- Build understanding of the context and nuances behind the data, giving analysts the knowledge they need to interpret it well.
- Bring analytical thinking, commercial context and customer considerations together when working through complex business problems.
- Develop robust, transparent analysis, models and code where needed, with a focus on work that is practical, maintainable and fit for purpose.
- Translate complex information into a clear story, adapting your approach for different audiences and building alignment around decisions.
- Coach and mentor analysts, share knowledge and strengthen analytical practices across the wider team.
While this work provides an important starting point, the role isn’t tied to one project or problem. Priorities will evolve, and we’re looking for someone with the breadth and adaptability to bring their experience to different challenges an opportunities across Retail over time.
Qualifications
Ko wai koe | About You
You’re someone who can work with data but doesn’t see every problem as a “data problem”! You’re curious about how a business works, comfortable building relationships and able to take an ambiguous question, understand what sits behind it and work with others to find a way forward.
You’ve built enough breadth in your career to have seen different ways of doing things, and you can draw on that experience without assuming there’s only one right approach. You’ll be confident bringing a perspective, constructively challenging assumptions and working with people who may see the problem differently.
You’ll bring:
- Broad senior-level experience across analytics, commercial or related roles, with the judgement to navigate complex and loosely defined problems.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to step back from the data to understand the business question that needs answering.
- Confidence building relationships across different areas of a business, understanding concerns and finding workable paths forward.
- Practical SQL capability and experience working with complex or large datasets. You don’t need to be an expert across multiple programming languages.
- Strong analytical capability, including data querying, modelling and end-to-end analysis.
- Commercial judgement and an ability to connect data with customer needs and the wider business context.
- Clear communication, data storytelling and stakeholder influencing skills, including with senior audiences.
- Experience coaching or mentoring analysts, sharing knowledge and improving analytical practices and ways of working.
- A relevant professional qualification, such as a degree in data science, economics, finance or a related discipline.
You don’t need to come from energy or telecommunications, and your career doesn’t need to have been spent entirely in data or analytics. Broader commercial or business experience could be a real strength here. What matters is that you have enough analytical grounding to work credibly with the data, alongside the experience and confidence to work through complex problems with people
