Company Description
Te Tākinatanga | Our Story
At Te Mata Hiko (Contact Energy), we believe home is the most important place in the world. It's all part of our vision to leave Aotearoa better than we found it. We’re a power, mobile and broadband company, but we’re so much more than that. We are transforming the ways we mahi, and how Aotearoa is powered, leading the charge on renewable energy and digitising customer journeys in ways not yet seen here. A team of 1000+ from all walks of life who love what we do, look out for each other, and learn from one another every day, we’re stoked to be guided by our tikanga: we touch lives to make life better.
The trading environment that we operate in is evolving, and so too is our team as we look to develop new energy markets, grow our earnings, and develop our capability.
Job Description
Kōrero mō te tūranga | About the role
Energy is a deeply complex sector and you’ll be right in the heart of it, part of a humming team of five (great, supportive humans) who are responsible for trading financial electricity products and carbon. Forward Markets covers a wide range of areas across Contact, so there’s no “typical day” we can describe. Your core focus will be trading financial contracts on the New Zealand electricity market, market making New Zealand Electricity Futures contracts listed on the ASX, and working with our Spot Markets and Dispatch teams to look at our strategies to manage risks and take opportunities to enhance our performance.
Reporting to the Forward Markets Manager, you’ll play a pivotal role in setting the strategy for Contact’s trading portfolio and managing market risks associated with electricity and carbon across multiple time horizons. Leveraging your extensive trading expertise, you’ll develop and execute our ASX futures trading strategy, price and negotiate over-the-counter transactions, develop and execute the Financial Transmission Rights (FTR) portfolio & trading book strategies - and execute carbon transactions.
We’re in a period of transformation, on a mission to decarbonise Aotearoa with loads of exciting projects underway and more coming up. A good chunk of your time will be focused on developing and improving models, trading tools, future trading algorithms and reporting tools, along with creation of pricing curves for commercial & industrial customers and supporting adjacent teams with pricing bespoke products for strategic customers.
This won’t just be great for your career, it’s great for Aotearoa.
Qualifications
Ko wai koe | About you
Tertiary-qualified with extensive experience in New Zealand’s wholesale energy or other financial markets, you’re great with numbers and largely unflappable. You’ve worked under pressure before and “get it”.
It would be great if you’re proficient in modern programming languages like R-Studio, SQL or Python, but not essential. What we need more than anything is commercial nous, comfort making fast decisions, and the capability to understand and communicate complex issues with ease.
Human centric in the way you mahi, you have great people and communication skills but are a critical thinker, not a people pleaser – you can influence with ease, but also deliver hard messages when they need to be heard. Above all, you’re a team player, open and willing to learn, with a high degree of energy and integrity.
Additional Information
The Forward Markets team are dotted between Wellington, Clyde, and Hamilton and collaborate mostly online, so provided you’ve got a stellar internet connection this role can be fully remote and we’re open to applications from all over Aotearoa.
Contact is not a place you’ll stagnate. We are growing and offer superb learning and development opportunities along with a bunch of other perks like free health insurance cover, better-than-your-average leave, access to Contact Shares, a ‘Good to be Home’ annual payment toward your home set up & wellbeing, a trail-blazing parental leave policy, discounts on Contact Energy products, and more.
This ad will close automatically on Friday 8 November but we’re considering applications as they come in so hop to it if you're keen, or if there's something you’re curious to know first, reach out to Tash on [email protected].
Please note, only candidates with the right to live and work in New Zealand will be considered for this role.
Research shows that while men apply to jobs where they meet 60% of the criteria, women and those in underrepresented groups tend to only apply if they tick every box. We're not about box ticking, so if you think you have what it takes but don't meet everything stated above, please still get in touch. We'd love to kōrero.
