Company Description

Ko wai mātou | About us

If you live locally, you probably know of Contact already.  We own and operate Clyde and Roxburgh dams. More than half a million Kiwis count on Contact Energy to keep the lights on and the hot water running. It’s an important job that our Hydro team is key to.

We’re on a growth trajectory, leading New Zealand in decarbonisation with a loy of exciting projects underway and more coming up. We are deeply committed to ensuring we leave Earth better than we found it, and are stoked to power it all with some of the very best #HumanEnergy Aotearoa has to offer. We’re looking now for a skilled Electrical Technician or Controls & Instrumentation Engineer to join as System Technician and help us put our energy where it matters.

Job Description

Kōrero mō te tūranga | About the role

Based out of Clyde, with some time spent in Roxburgh and Hawea, our System Technicians cover all things control and protection. This can be HV (High Voltage) equipment testing, maintenance on protection systems, calibration, and tuning of instruments or programming of PLC’s and control networks. System Techs are always involved in and may run small projects, allowing time to work with key stakeholders and grow broader project management skills.

Part of a small friendly team, the learning opportunities in this role are huge. We don’t work in silos – you’ll work closely with other engineers and technicians, gaining exposure to a range of mahi and technical challenges that mean you grow as you go. Our System Techs are the brains behind maintaining and improving plant capability, reliability, and efficiency, providing on-site technical support, and play a key role in execution of projects by assisting with scope of works, tendering, and technical inputs for control and instrumentation or protection.

Qualifications

Ko wai koe | About you

You’re an engineer, so this probably goes without saying, but we’re looking for somebody solutions-driven with a real technical bent. Working in power generation can throw up all sorts of curly challenges you might not have come across elsewhere, so it’s essential to have initiative and be able to apply it, using rigorous logic and methods to solve difficult problems with effective solutions. The ability to take a risk-based approach to determining the balance between commercial drivers and technical risk will be key.

A clear communicator, you’re an open book, quick to find common ground when problem-solving and the sort of person who tends to earn trust and credibility quickly with peers. Ambiguity doesn’t worry you – you’re comfortable with change, able to adapt and shift gears as need be, and you’re a keen learner, always looking to grow your own knowledge base.

All of that said, we look at skill set first – you’ll need to have qualifications in Electrical and Controls & Instrumentation Engineering (National Diploma/NZCE Trade Certification or equivalent) and a decent amount of relevant work experience in power systems, electrical protection and testing, or control and instrumentation systems. Bonus points if you have contract and project management experience.

Additional Information

This is a permanent full-time role, working 7:30 am – 4:00 pm five days a week, with flex to work from home when it makes sense to do so.

Contact Energy is committed to being an inclusive employer. We want people to be themselves, after all, they can't be anyone else!

Please note, only candidates with the right to live and work in New Zealand will be considered for this role.
