Among the largest areas served are Bay City, Flint, Jackson, Kalamazoo, Lansing, Macomb, Midland, Royal Oak, Saginaw and Livonia. More than one-half of the utility's gas customers are in metro Detroit.

The company has one of the largest underground natural gas storage capacities in the country. This allows the company to economically purchase and store gas during warm months, for eventual use in the winter heating season.

Job Description

Position Summary

This position would be within the Restoration Management team and would provide leadership and technical statewide support for all Consumers Energy users of restoration systems (Outage Management System, Weather, Catastrophic Crewing, Storm Dashboard, Outage Reporting, etc.) and reliability analytics, which impact many departments within Consumers Energy, but specifically within Operations and Engineering.  The Electric Operations Restoration Lead supervises Exempt, Non-Exempt, and Contractor employees to deliver a high level of service to internal and external customers.  The lead is responsible for the integrity of the outage data, analytics, reporting, and is critical to improving electric grid reliability World Class Performance Metric, as well as MPSC regulatory standards.

This work location for this position will be available at the Parnall Office in Jackson, Michigan OR the Lansing, Michigan Service Center.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Work with business stakeholders to develop system requirements and IT developers to design and test restoration management system enhancements.
  • Developing a long range plan for system enhancements including participation on industry benchmarking.
  • Auditing adherence to the outage data review and correction process and teaching employees how to complete complex corrections within Outage Management System.
  • Analyzing and developing reporting to support World Class Performance Goals and MPSC regulatory standards.
  • Lead and manage employees for development and goals.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Leadership abilities to effectively supervise and develop engineers or technical specialists including independent strategic and tactical planning, and risk evaluation.
  • Skilled in the following systems Outage Management System, Service Suite, Catastrophic Crewing, Outage Reporting, Storm Dashboard, SAP, GIS, Microsoft Suite, PI Historian and other programs as they relate to the role.
  • Organizational aptitude with project management, quality, and communication abilities including leading complex projects, problem solving using experience in utility industry trends.

Qualifications

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited university or college.

             o   In lieu of a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, a Bachelor’s degree in a scientific/technical field or extensive Company or industry experience in positions that demonstrate required abilities and performance may be considered for placement in the Engineering Tech Analyst job family

  • 8 or more years of applied ABET exempt engineering working experience.

The following experience may set you apart from others:

  • 5 or more years of electric distribution system experience (operations or system engineering/design experience is acceptable).

Essential Functions

  • Extensive knowledge of the electric distribution system as well as electric restoration processes for restoration system use cases. 
  • Planning, design, construction, and maintenance of Electric and Gas Distribution and Electric Generation systems as well as facilities and ancillary support process for all utility operations.
  • Duties and who this individual reports to will fluctuate between projects, Practice Areas, and offices.
  • Individual needs to possess leadership ability, quality focus, ability to problem solve, work well in a team environment, and be calm and collected under pressure. 
  • The individual would be in an on call rotation for a leadership role in electric service restoration to support weather event or other emergency impacts to the electric grid. 
  • The individual would also be responsible for being a lead for a restoration role, which requires training/coaching new employees to electric service restoration.
  • Individual should exemplify safe work practices and follow the company’s compliance standards. 
  • Lead and/or assist with engineering projects to include system requirement design, project planning, auditing data integrity, which impacts system planning, system parameter specification development, analyzing data from multiple sources, developing reporting, managing contracts, schedules, estimates, data collection and field investigation for system improvement application. 
  • Provide engineering services with accuracy, integrating all applicable governmental and company laws, standards and procedures on time and under budget.
  • Use Outage Management System, Smart Meter data and algorithms, and Service Suite to analyze and recreated data when necessary that drives key Company investment decisions for the electric reliability. 
  • Be able to develop project plans and specifications, system maps, system manuals/user guides and related material for each project and be able to utilize the information appropriately. 
  • Assist in internal and external customer contact and communication. 
  • Utilize effective oral and written communication skills to provide technical expertise to coworkers, internal and external customers, regulatory entities and industry experts. 
  • Public involvement may include producing reports, graphics, presentations, and other visual material as well as occasional speaking or meeting with stakeholders.
  • Attend internal and external meetings. 
  • Provide all engineering services in a legal and ethical manner.
  • Resolve all customer complaints in a timely manner. 
  • Regular attendance is expected.

Hours and Travel

  • This position requires the individual work a minimum of 40 hours per week (45-50 typical) with 90% of time spent in the office, and with up to 10% of the time spent in specific field locations.
  • Travel is required to job sites and project meetings and could be significant dependent upon location. 
  • Individuals need to be willing to work additional hours as necessary to meet deadlines or assist with storm restoration activities.
  • Individual should be willing to participate in the on call rotation in case of potential storms.
  • Individual may have to work outside of assigned headquarters to help with storm restoration which may require overnight stays.
  • Individuals must have a valid driver’s license.
