The company has one of the largest underground natural gas storage capacities in the country. This allows the company to economically purchase and store gas during warm months, for eventual use in the winter heating season.

Design Technician (Technician III)

Department Summary

This position is located within Energy Delivery / Gas Asset Management / Distribution Pipeline Engineering (DPE) and will report to the DPE Design Lead.  Distribution Pipeline Engineering (DPE) is responsible for designing and preparing Gas Distribution work orders for construction of CAP mains, and system improvement work that includes Civic, Augment, EIRP, New Business, and other capital programs that support the goals and objectives of Gas Asset Management (GAM).

Job Description/Responsibilities

The Design Technician applies company design and construction standards to develop detailed non-routine engineering designs and construction specifications for gas main and service.  A CAD environment is used in the development of detailed gas distribution system construction drawings.  The design technician will be involved with planning, monitoring and facilitating the progress of projects through the SAP process to meet internal and external customer needs.  Other job responsibilities will include, updating the Decision Analysis Project Planning (DAPP) database; initiating material procurement in advance of construction; permitting activities with local governmental agencies; and the application of standards contained in the Gas Distribution Engineering Manual (GDEM).

There are three positions available.  Selected candidates may elect to report to one of the following gas headquarters: Livonia, Royal Oak, Macomb (Clinton Twp.), Groveland (Holly), Saginaw, Lansing, Jackson or Kalamazoo.

Qualifications

Requirements/Qualifications

  • A two-year associate degree in a scientific or technical field, or 48 scientific or technical credit hours as measured on a semester basis.  The 48 scientific or technical credit hours can be obtained through colleges, technical institutes, licensed apprenticeship programs, trade schools, military programs, etc.
  • In lieu of a scientific/technical degree, applicable experience may be acceptable for placement in this role.
  • A demonstrated proficiency in Computer Aided Design (CAD).

The following skills and experience may set you apart from others:

  • A demonstrated proficiency in SAP.
  • Prior system improvement design experience.
  • Intermediate and/or Advanced Main design training.
  • One and one-half or more years’ experience as a Technician I or Service Designer I with working experience in the specialized area.

Essential Functions

  • Maintains and troubleshoots electronic, electrical, mechanical, and other equipment for plant, electric and gas distribution and transmission systems.
  • Repairs, calibrates and/or programs electronic components.
  • Repairs and/or replaces transfer switchgear for generators, motor control panels, pump controls, valves, cables, and adjustable frequency drives.
  • Resolves computer problems with process control software.
  • Operates and maintains electronic equipment, diagnostic instruments, and software in performance of assigned duties, specifically: computers, volt meters, amp meters, electrical tools, electronic tools, and telemetering, and process control software.
  • Receives reports, electrical diagrams, and correspondence; reviews, processes, or maintains documentation for reference.
  • Consults with manufacturers' service technicians, contractors, and vendor representatives to discuss problems, schedule installs, and evaluate costs for necessary parts, supplies, or repairs.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
  • Reviews, edits, develops, manages, and interprets documents and drawings utilized for the purposes of maintaining, constructing, testing, and removing equipment and facilities for plant, electric, and gas distribution and transmission systems.
  • Makes design decisions with regard to electronic, electrical, mechanical, civil, and structural aspects of equipment and facilities utilized for plant, electric, and gas distribution and transmission.
  • Consults with supervisors, operators, technicians, manufacturers, vendors, subject matter experts and engineers to review assigned area needs, discuss problems, prioritize work, and provide technical expertise.
  • Regular attendance is expected.

  • Meet travel requirements of the position.
  • Work a flexible schedule, which may include evenings, weekends, holidays and overtime.
