Job Description

SUMMARY: Provides safe, nurturing, and welcoming environment for young children, attends to physical needs of children, serves snacks and drinks; plays indoor and/or outdoor games; reads to children; supervises children playing. Maintains communications with parents and guardians. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Is committed to the vision and mission of Head Start of York County and Community Progress Council, Inc;
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with diverse individuals, including children, families, co-workers, and staff in related agencies and the general public;
  • Assist in maintaining a clean, safe and positive classroom environment that facilitates respect, active learning, group management, self-expression, cultural responsibility, child-initiated learning;
  • Prepares and develops developmentally appropriate learning activities for children, in accordance with the program curriculum;
  • Assist in following a consistent schedule;
  • Assist in preparing classroom materials prior to the children’s arrival;
  • Assist in preparing and maintaining the required paperwork, attendance reports, medication log, meal counts, and other documents and records;
  • Assist in carrying out regular health observations to ensure children are well and have no contagious diseases and to check for signs of abuse or neglect; report suspicions of physical, sexual, and emotional abuse or neglect;
  • Maintain confidentiality of information regarding children and families; assist in reviewing and upholding Confidentiality Policy with parent volunteers, community volunteers and staff from outside agencies;
  • Serve as a role model and mentor for parent and community volunteers by performing job duties in accordance with program curriculum, and agency policy and procedures;
  • All other duties as assigned.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  Ability to write simple correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization. Whenever possible, speak the client’s language to the best of your ability.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide into all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. 

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.  Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

COMPUTER: Experience with Microsoft Office Suite in a Windows environment helpful and preferred.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Current (less than 1-year), satisfactory Pennsylvania State Criminal and Child Abuse History Certifications are required prior to hire; Federal FBI Clearance results, along with a physical assessment, including a tuberculosis skin test, required within 30-days of hire; Mandated Reporter Child Abuse training certification required within 90-days of hire; Valid driver’s license and current insurance coverage is required.

Qualifications

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE: Must meet one of the following qualification levels for an AGS, as set by Department of Human Services guidelines:

  1.  A high school diploma or a general educational development certificate and 30 credit hours from an accredited college or university in early childhood education, child development, special education, elementary education or the human services field.
  2. A high school diploma or a general educational development certificate, including 600 or more hours of secondary training described in §  3270.31(c) (relating to age and training).
  3. A high school diploma or a general educational development certificate, 15 credit hours from an accredited college or university in early childhood education, child development, special education, elementary education or the human services field and 1 year of experience with children.
  4.  A high school diploma or a general education development certificate and completion of a post-secondary training curriculum described in §  3270.31(c).
  5. A high school diploma or a general educational development certificate and 2 years experience with children.

We are currently seeking two AGS's to fill positions in the afternoon time frame of 2-6 pm. We may expand to mornings in the future. This position is part-time, up to 25-hours per week, but additional hours may be available.This is a 44 week program year.
