The Colorado Democracy Alliance (“CoDA”), and its sister organization, the Colorado Democracy Network (“CDN”), are looking for a dynamic new Executive Director. CoDA and CDN are active donor communities that support the development and expansion of progressive political and charitable investments in Colorado. Our vision is a more equitable, engaged, and just Colorado. The Executive Director will be in charge of all day-to-day operations of running the organization, leading our growth in size and influence each year, and in contributing to progressive victories in Colorado.

CoDA’s mission is to build and fund a permanent, statewide infrastructure to ensure a sustainable progressive majority in Colorado. CDN’s mission is to help fund and grow a thriving and lasting civic engagement ecosystem in our state. CDN is a non-profit 501(c)(3) and does not engage in partisan political work. Donors in both organizations maximize their impact by making aligned investments in high-performing progressive organizations and efforts.

Job Description

We are searching for a leader to serve as the full-time Executive Director of both CoDA and CDN. The position is based in Denver, Colorado. The Executive Director will work with Boards of Directors, comprised of donors, organizational leaders, and political strategists, to raise and direct funds to partner organizations in the state and to evaluate and report on progress. The ideal candidate has an entrepreneurial mindset and is a strategic thinker, a confident fundraiser, and a collaborative leader.

The Primary Responsibilities for this job include:

Donor Recruitment, Retention & Advising:

  • Conduct outreach to and recruitment of donor-members in-state and nationally, with a focus on bringing in new members each year.

  • Work individually with donor-members to advise on their political and charitable giving.

  • Plan, design and distribute reports and other educational materials to donor-members and prospects about the political and non-profit progressive landscape and campaigns.

  • Plan and implement regular CoDA member meetings and briefings and organize an annual retreat. 

  • Plan and implement regular CDN briefings and events that are 501(c)(3) compliant.  

Executive and Operational Management:

  • Create and implement a multi-year donor-development and fundraising plan that supports the organizations’ priorities and goals.

  • Supervise administrative staff and oversee the work of consultants to the organizations.

  • Manage the organizations’ slate process, including developing funding recommendations, creating grant applications and agreements, tracking the progress on grants, and reporting on metrics to members, donors, and funders.   

  • Manage the relationship with the Boards of Directors, and work closely with the boards to develop and meet annual goals and budgets.

  • Work with legal counsel to review materials, programs, governance, and on compliance issues.

  • Develop and raise annual budget, including overseeing financial operations, day-to-day accounting, budgeting, compliance, and tax preparation. 

  • Write grants and reports needed to secure and sustain operational funding.

Strategic Thinking, Planning, and Collaboration:

  • Work with progressive partners and strategists to support their activities, including helping design plans and campaigns in Colorado. 

  • Represent the organizations in meetings and discussions of state and national collaborations, including America Votes, Committee on States, and more.    

  • Communicate effectively and sensitively with a wide range of stakeholders through strong written, verbal and relational skills.

Qualifications

Experience and Skills Desired for This Position:

  • Demonstrated commitment to progressive values, preferably with experience in campaigns, non-profit organizations, advocacy, or legislative offices.

  • Experience in senior roles in fundraising, board and staff management and operations.

  • Experience with the full range of major donor fundraising, including prospecting, cultivation, and making direct asks.

  • Exceptional communications skills, including public speaking.

  • Experience managing operational, financial and legal business of non-profits, campaigns, or other organizations.

  • Expert relationship builder, with a variety of people: staff, consultants, donors, stakeholders, elected leaders, and external allies.

  • Experience with event planning.

  • Knowledge of the Colorado political and progressive landscape.

  • Experience using and maintaining databases to research, track, and report on contributions and finances.

  • Understanding of 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4), 527, and independent expenditure procedures and regulations preferred.

  • Ability to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends.

  • Willingness to travel to Boulder and other key locations around the state as needed. National trips for meetings/conferences 1-2 times per year.

  • Strong people skills, ability to exercise good judgment, and extreme discretion are a must. 

Additional Information

Compensation: The salary range for this role is between $90,000 and $110,000 with the exact salary depending on years of relevant experience. Benefits include paid vacation days and a health insurance stipend, and may be expanded to include additional items.
