Health and Safety Advisor

Job Description

Our client has unparalleled international experience in infrastructure projects, bridges, highways, tunnels, dams and marine works.

As a result of a significant award in the Aberdeen area they are now looking to appoint experienced Health and Safety Advisor on a 6 month contract, ideally from a main contractor civil engineering and marine construction background.

In this instance my client is looking for interested applicants who already live in the Aberdeen area (or commutable) and/or are willing to relocate on a permanent basis

Purpose of the job

Responsible for providing the project advice on all H&S matters. Including:

Formulation of Policy

Standards and compliance

Promoting Industry best practice

Act as a champion and mentor for H&S personnel within the Project

Responsible for the management of all H&S aspects of the contract including developing and managing the appropriate part of the CPHSP, the contract H&S plan to ensure compliance with UK safety management system. 

To develop an appropriate knowledge of the works information

Accountabilities / key responsibilities

Ensure efficient coordination of all H&S functions of the Contract

Provide H&S support to the AHEP in coordinating the delivery of the contract

Promote a positive health and safety culture

Develop and assist with implementing the project health and safety policy

Influence and keep pace with improvements in health and safety practice. Deliver H&S continuous improvement through performance management, the implementation of SMART targets and the analysis of trends

Develop and review health and safety strategy

Initiate and maintain inspection and monitoring procedures for all activities.

Assist with inductions and training as required by the Project Manager

Assist with carrying out investigations into accidents and incidents jointly with the H&S Manager and report findings and recommendations to the H&S Manager.

Undertake regular safety tours of sites, offices and depots

Review all accident reports and ensure appropriate distribution, ensure that incident data is entered on the appropriate incident management database, devise and promote initiatives to deal with the causes of recurring accidents. Maintain statistical records of injuries, diseases, near misses and dangerous occurrences resulting from AHEP activities and review them regularly for trends.

Report regularly, to the H&S Manager responsible for health and safety, on AHEP health and safety performance

Assist and chair regular health & safety team meetings

Set a personal example of safe behaviour

Develop and implement effective project communication systems for health and safety information

Experience, knowledge, qualifications & training

The role will require the post holder to have excellent communication skills in English, both written and verbal and to be able to report at project and Board level

In depth knowledge of current and future Health and Safety legislation and best practice 

Health and Safety Qualifications and Experience 

Previously held roles as an experience H&S Advisor in similar sized construction organisations

The post holder should be educated to degree level or equivalent. A lower educational level, may be acceptable where a very significant level of experience in a senior H&S management role can be demonstrated

Business and commercial awareness

Ability to influence at leadership levels 

Strong interpersonal skills and a clear understanding of how to match legal and project requirement

The ability to manage multiple agendas at the same time.

Member of the IOSH or IIRSM or equivalent professional qualification.

Experience of implementing Behavioural Based Safety Initiatives

Experience of implementing Occupational Health Initiatives

Experience of implementing Training Initiatives and Programmes

Experience of delivering training and conducting presentations as required

Computer literate with experience of Microsoft Powerpoint, Excel, Word, Outlook

Audit Experience of OHSAS 18001

Hold a CSCS Card
